29 October-2 November – Merve Elveren
Senior Programmer of Research and Programs at SALT in Turkey.
Merve Elveren is a curator and a researcher with a particular interest on intersections of memory, visual culture and politics. Since 2011 she is a programmer at SALT, a research-based cultural institution in Istanbul and Ankara. In 2013 together with Duygu Demir she organized A Promised Exhibition, a comprehensive exhibition of Gülsün Karamustafa. In 2015 she curated How did we get here, realized under the framework of L’Internationale’s five-year program The Uses of Art-The Legacy of 1848 and 1989. The project traced the origins of the current context of Turkey in relation to the 1980s via elements of popular culture and social movements. A selection from How did we get here traveled to Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven for the exhibition The 1980s. Today’s Beginnings? (2016). She is currently working on Continuity Error, the first major survey of Aydan Murtezaoğlu and Bülent Şangar, prominent figures in shaping the emerging contemporary art scene in 1990s Turkey, which will open in 2018. Revolving around two performative installations, produced in collaboration, the exhibition presents a broad selection of the artists’ works dating from the early 1990s until the early 2010s.
Her visit is planned in contact with the embassy of the Netherlands in Ankara, Turkey.
