Heading East: New Institutional Models in Central and Eastern Europe

The Mondriaan Fund, in close collaboration with the Stedelijk Museum, is proud to present the symposium Heading East, which showcases the work of eight artistic directors, curators, and theorists from Central and Eastern Europe. They will discuss the shifting landscape of the visual arts in their respective countries or cities, and how this shapes the institutional models with which they are working.

The contemporary art field in Central and Eastern Europe has undergone rapid changes, not only directly after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 (and the subsequent rise of capitalism), but also more recently in the continuing expansion of the European Union and the massive protests in the Ukraine. Eight art professionals from Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, and Slovakia will share their insights and experiences on how changing social and political structures inform and affect the art institutions where they have been working.
