Prospects & Concepts 2015

The third edition of Prospects & Concepts, where the Mondriaan Fund presents young talent, took place from 5 to 8 February 2015 at the Van Nellefabriek in Rotterdam. The work of the thirteen visual artists who received a Talent Development Grant in 2013 were selected by curator Mirjam Westen and presented in an exhibition design by Tom Postma Design.

The contributing artists were: Fleur van Dodewaard, Jonathan van Doornum, Kevin Gallagher, Jan Hoek, Folke Janssen, Guy Königstein, Omar Koubâa, Lennart Lahuis, Jenny Lindblom, Inge Meijer, Snejanka Mihaylova, Emma van der Put, and Lotte Reimann. The exhibition featured work from all disciplines – from painting to installations, from video to performances – and by artists ranging from as yet unknown talent to those who already have high-profile projects to their name.

The exhibition was accompanied by a publication on the contributing artists. During the exhibition the Mondriaan Fund organized a side programme with guided tours, presentations, performances and speed-dates with the participating artists and an information meeting for novice artists.

As fewer artists received the Talent Development Grant in 2013 than in the previous year, more work by all the artists could be shown in this edition of Prospects & Concepts. Fewer artists applied for the grant in 2013 because many had already done so in 2012, before the cutbacks were implemented and because since 2013 an artist must first be professionally active for a year to become eligible. Incidentally, the number of applications for the Talent Development Grant in 2014 has increased sharply again to 55.

Artists can apply to the Mondriaan Fund Talent Development Grant (18,000 euro) up to four years after graduating from an arts education. The support can be used for anything associated with new work, such as research, materials, equipment and projects in the Netherlands or abroad.

The Mondriaan Fund organizes the exhibition Prospects & Concepts every year in order to boost the visibility of emerging artists. With Art Rotterdam just around the corner, art professionals and collectors, but also a broad group of interested individuals have the opportunity to become acquainted with the work of these promising artists. Moreover, the exhibition is a perfect opportunity to present the work produced thanks, in part, to a contribution from the Mondriaan Fund.
