Borderland Residencies is a Euregional network of art institutions. This joint initiative involves artist residencies in the Dutch-German border area of the Lower Rhine region and the Province of Limburg. The location on the periphery is one of the organisation’s strengths: the available living and working space (in contrast with the Ruhr Area and the Randstad), the hands-on mentality that traditionally characterises both regions and the many art initiatives and workshops offer fertile ground for artistic development and reflection.

Eight organisations in the region are involved with the initiative: Kunstmuseum Bochum, Schloss Ringenberg in Hamminkeln, Kulturforum Alte Post in Neuss, Kunstgenerator in Vierssen, Odapark in Venray, Museum van Bommel van Dam in Venlo, Greylight Projects in Heerlen and the Internationales Atelierstipendium Mönchengladbach.

The Dutch participants in this programme are Greylight Projects in Heerlen and Odapark in Venray. The Borderland programme supports the members’ activities by organising multi-day field trips for artists from all of the participating residencies, through meetings with curators and institutions from the region and with a public programme including lectures, presentations and workshops. The programme offers participating artists the opportunity to forge contacts on both sides of the border, with both fellow artists and institutions. The field trips also focus on broader themes in the region, such as energy production, agricultural transition and the aging population.

Within the cross-border collaboration Borderland Residencies, Greylight Projects in Heerlen and Odapark in Venray offer two residencies to enable artists from the Netherlands to broaden their practice and network. The two artists are invited to respond to the immediate surroundings in Limburg and the Euregio. Both residencies have their own focus within the broader context of the Borderland residency. At both locations, the residency period is concluded with an open studio in the final weekend.

NB! it is not possible to apply for both locations. Please indicate in your motivation letter which of the 2 locations you choose.

For whom?

Multidisciplinary artists keen to delve deeper into their work and who see their work in relation to the environment. Artists who are open to sharing their practice with other artists. The medium is not subject to restrictions, but the practice does need to be in line with the programme on offer.

The Borderland Residencies programme is in English, and in Dutch and English at the Greylight and Odapark locations.

Work period

Two work periods are available: one at Greylight Projects and one at Odapark, for a work period of 3 months: 1 September to 30 November 2023.

Applicants are asked to state their preferred residency in their motivation. This work period is conditional and subject to change, e.g. in light of developments linked to the coronavirus pandemic.

The contribution

The Mondriaan Fund makes a monthly contribution of € 2,000 available to help cover travel expenses, material costs and accommodation costs. This sum is intended for 1 person. In addition, the selected resident is expected to pay a 10% personal contribution (the Mondriaan Fund automatically takes this into account in their ultimate subsidy, you do not need to do anything). In the case that a duo or collaboration is selected for the residency, the associated contribution will be raised to cover additional travel expenses, as well as a proportionate sum to contribute to the other applicant’s accommodation costs. Expenses associated with renting the studio/living space, supervision and presentation are not included in the contribution and will be covered by the Mondriaan Fund.

Applications

The deadline for submitting an application for a work period in 2023 is 3 October 2022, before 17:00 CET. Note: it is not possible to apply for both locations. Indicate in your motivation which of the two locations you choose.

Before submitting an application, please read the general explanation of the Residency grant for the terms and conditions, application procedure and assessment procedure. Please also read the terms and conditions applicable to all Mondriaan Fund contributions.
