The new competition for the Prix de Rome, the incentive award for talented artists under the age of 40, begins on 5 January, 2021. Artists from the Netherlands can then respond to an open call to apply. An international jury will select a shortlist from these applications, and ultimately a winner, whose award will include a cash amount of 40,000 Euros.

The Prix de Rome Visual Arts jury members for 2021 are: Ann Demeester (director, Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem), Amira Gad (head of programs, LAS Light Art Space, Berlin), Antonio Jose Guzman (visual artist, researcher, lecturer), Samuel Leuenberger (director, SALTS, Basel) and Viviane Sassen (photographer, winner of the 2007 Prix de Rome in Visual Arts).

Chairing the 2021 jury (with no vote) is Eelco van der Lingen, director of the Mondriaan Fund): “Today, a classic prize such as the Prix de Rome is more than relevant. For the winner, and for the nominees as well, it is a recognition and a podium full of potential, with a view to international attention and appreciation. To my great joy, this high status of the Prix de Rome is further confirmed by the excellence of the jury, in which various international expertises, positions and perspectives come together.”

Artists selected for the shortlist will exhibit new work at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam at the end of 2021. As it was for the previous edition, the Stedelijk Museum is a collaborating partner for the Prix de Rome.

The Prix de Rome is organized and financed by the Mondriaan Fund. It is the oldest art award in the Netherlands, dating back to 1808. The objective of the Prix de Rome is to discover talented artists, stimulate them and increase their visibility. In contrast to previous years, scouts will no longer be used in 2021. All visual artists who meet the conditions can apply. Duos or collectives can apply as long as all members meet the criteria.
