The new round of the Prix de Rome, the pre-eminent incentive award for talented artists, launches at the start of January 2023. Eligible artists will then have the opportunity to apply via an open call. From these applications, an international jury will select a shortlist of four artists and ultimately a winner, who will be rewarded with a € 40,000 contribution and a residency of their choice.

The members of the jury in 2023 are: Ann Demeester (Director of Kunsthaus Zürich), Ahmet Polat (photographer and filmmaker; founder and Director of Studio Polat), Robbert Roos (Director of Kunsthal KAdE, Amersfoort), Femke Herregraven (visual artist and 2019 nominee), Christina Li (freelance curator and writer) and Eelco van der Lingen (Director of the Mondriaan Fund), who is the non-voting Chair.

Eelco van der Lingen:

‘The Prix de Rome is the oldest award for visual artists in the Netherlands, but that certainly does not mean it is static. The award is focused on progress and development, and is therefore always relevant. An award such as this demands an expert jury with a keen eye for potential, new developments and current trends. I am therefore delighted with the quality of this jury, which also unites various international expertise, positions and perspectives’.

The artists selected for the shortlist will exhibit new work from mid-October 2023 on at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, which is once again collaborating with the Prix de Rome following the successful partnership for the previous edition.

The Prix de Rome is organised and financed by the Mondriaan Fund. The aim of the Prix de Rome is to stimulate the development of highly talented visual artists and to boost their visibility, thereby ensuring that the visual art field remains topical. In a change to previous editions, no age limit will be in place. Eligible visual artists (the terms & conditions will soon be available) can apply from Thursday 12 January 2023 onwards using the Mondriaan Fund application system. Duos and collectives are also welcome to apply, as long as all members are eligible.

The latest information on the deadline, how to apply, the terms & conditions and the complete application procedure is available on the Prix de Rome website and our social media.
