Vleeshal – Simone Forti, ‘Here it Comes’

Up until April 3rd Vleeshal in Middelburg is presenting a considerable solo exhibition by visual artist, choreographer, dancer and writer Simone Forti. Forti was one of the pioneers of the minimalist movement, but did not gain great notoriety in the world of visual arts. Her work has contributed to the cross-pollination between sculpture and performance, and to the development of a feeling for ‘what we know about the objects around us through our bodies’.

At Vleeshal Markt Forti’s Five Dance Constructions & Some Other Things will be presented until March 28th, performed by a group of ‘movers’. From March 28th until April 2nd Simone Forti and Charlemagne Palestine will be using Vleeshal Markt as a rehearsal space in order to create a new version of their performance Illuminations, especially designed for the gothic architecture of the old city hall. At Vleeshal Zusterstraat a selection of Forti’s work from various time period will be shown; drawings, photographs, videos and documentation of performances, including archive material of Simone Forti’s first performance in Middelburg.

The Mondriaan Fund supported this Simone Forti exhibition with a Grant for Multiannual Programming Art Platforms. Vleeshal is an art platform which programmes both starting as well as established artists and realises coproduction’s with a wide network of international institutions. Director Roos Gortzak developed a multiannual programme with an emphasis on performance and performativity in visual arts. The programme consists of group presentations and various soloexhibitions, for instance by Cally Spooner, Ola Vasiljeva and Simone Forti.
