Visual artist Nico Bick created the photo series Parliaments of the European Union, wherein he gives an overview of all the plenary rooms in which the public representatives of the EU Member States and the EU itself hold assembly. The underlying theme of the series is the working of democracy, the power of people’s representation. By focusing in on empty plenary rooms of European parliaments- as living rooms or houses of democracy- the theme comes to expressions. The chosen format was the photographic panorama. Each parliaments is different, and allows itself to be compared to other parliaments at the hand of an overview of its entire space.

What characterises Bick’s work is its reflections on the physical aspects of social and political structures and institutions. His approach is a structured way of working that results in photo’s which at first glance appear distance. However, through taking time to observe carefully the similarities and differences become visible.

The Mondriaan Fund contributed a Project Investment for Visual Artists for the completion of this series. Bick also received an interest-free loan from Fonds Kwadraat.
