TENT Rotterdam – Nicky Assmann

Nicky Assmann en Joris Strijbos, Liquid Solid, 2015 Nicky Assmann en Joris Strijbos, Liquid Solid, 2015

On Sunday the 31st of January Liquid Solid premieres in TENT Rotterdam. It is a short film by artists Nicky Assmann and Joris Strijbos. The film shows the registration of the freezing of soap films in open air with temperatures of around -22 degrees Celsius. The work is the result of research carried out in cooperation with the Kilpisjärvi Biological Station of the University of Helsinki in Finland. The film will be screened on the occasion of the last day of Nicky Assmanns solo exhibition in TENT, entitled Radiant.

The exhibition comprises four space-filling installations centred on the sensory experience. Herein, Assmann combines knowledge form science, technology and art. She makes use of light, mechanics and abstract geometry to create optical phenomena, with which she in turn investigates the mental and physical observational process. Against the backdrop of our visual culture in which perceptions of reality occur increasingly in the virtual domain, she returns to the physical fundamentals of sight and seeing.

Prior to the premiere Nicky Assmann will hold an English-langue tour of the exhibition. The evening will end with a Q&A under the guidance of Mariette Dölle (artistic director TENT).

The Mondriaan Fund contributed to the exhibition with a Grant for Commissioning Contemporary Art (Bijdrage Opdrachtgeverschap) for the creation of new work by Nicky Assmann.
