Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art – Antonis Pittas

Until 30 September the fifth edition of the Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art, titled Old Intersections – Make it New III, is taking place in Thessaloniki, Greece. Antonis Pittas was asked to produce new work for the central exhibition of the biennale, curated by Katerina Gregos.

Pittas created Throw Hands, a ‘performative space’ for which he produced four large hands that function both as autonomous sculpture and furniture. As furniture the hands serve as a stage to the archival work Pittas is presenting: old-fashioned clipboards, reproduced in expensive materials such as marble and bronze. Attached to them are various collages of images showing hands of politicians and other political actors, as represented in news media.

The Mondriaan Fund contributed to the production and presentation of Throw Hands via a Grant International Presentations.
