14-18 May, curators from Cuba and the United States
In November 2017 a group of curators from the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and Switzerland visited Cuba (Havana) and the United States (Miami, Houston and New Orleans) during the Orientation trip organized by the Mondriaan Fund.
As follow-up of the trip a group of curators from both countries will visit the Netherlands. The group will visit institutions and meet art professionals and give a public talk on their practise.
The visit is organized in collaboration with the Netherlands embassy in Havana and the Netherlands Consulate in New York.
Artistic director On the Boards, Seattle
Before Rachel worked as Curator at DiverseWorks in Houston, Texas. Major accomplishments include the commissioning of French artist Julien Previeux’s first staged dance work, What Shall We Do Next? (2016) and the organization of the group exhibition of the same name, featuring Previeux, Kristin Lucas, Danielle Dean, and Versace Versace Versace; and the commissioning and presentation of multidisciplinary performance projects including Takahiro Yamamoto’s Direct Path to Detour (2017), Wura-Natasha Ogunji’s House of Wahala (2017), Meg Wolfe’s New Faithful Disco (2016), taisha paggett’s The School for the Movement of the Technicolor People (2016), Tahni Holt’s Duet Love (2015), and Dean Moss’s johnbrown (2015). During her five-year tenure she also revitalized the Artist Advisory Board, developed and organized the Diverse Discourse visiting curators series, and managed The Idea Fund re-granting program. A native of Houston, Cook has played an integral role in the identity and overall artistic programming of DiverseWorks. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the National Performance Network.
Prior to joining DiverseWorks, Cook worked for dOCUMENTA(13)’s publication team, and was a fellow for the International Studio & Curatorial Program in New York. Cook holds a MA from the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College and a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Last year she received a Curatorial Fellowship from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts to research a series of Walker Evans’ photographs from the African Negro Art exhibition at MoMA in 1935.
Cristina Figueroa Vives
Art historian and curator specializing in New Media Art from Cuba and Latin America
Curator at the independent art space Estudio Figueroa-Vives in Havana since 2013 and at Casa de las Américas since 2006 where she is focused in the development and research of its art collection. M.A in Art History (University of Havana) and M.A in Arts and New Media (Ramón Llull University, Barcelona). She has carried out several independent projects of curatorship in national and foreign institutions. She has published in specialized magazines, catalogs and blogs and has taught courses and conferences on Contemporary Art and New Media at the University of Havana and at the Havana insitute of Art (ISA). She is a member of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) and the International Association of Art Critics (AICA), Paris.
Curatorial assistant of the Modern and Contemporary Art department of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
She also is as well as the curator of video art for Landmarks, the public art program of the University of Texas at Austin and doctoral candidate in the History of Art Department at Cornell University. Her dissertation is on the aesthetics and avant-gardism of black American art from the 1920s to the 1970s, and she has published articles on contemporary art of the black diaspora as it relates to gender, labor, body politics, self-representation and racial identification. Fletcher earned a BA in English Literature at Rutgers University—New Brunswick and an MA in Latin American Studies with a focus on black Brazilian art and cultural politics at the University of Texas at Austin.
Abel González Fernández, Havana
Writer and Independent curator, based in Cuba.
His literary background has been used to approach to the conceptual and political art, and the exercise of edition. He has worked as curator with Wifredo Lam Center of Contemporary Art, Servando Gallery, Los Carpinteros Studio, Absolut Art, et al; and he has been involved with Cuban and international artists from Germany, Netherlands and Japan. Since two years ago, he is concentrated in an investigation of the Cuban and Latin America Modern Tradition from an interdisciplinary perspective. Some of his texts can be read in Hypermediamagazine. He is interested in a close collaboration with artists and in local scenes.
Orlando Hernández Pascual
Writer, poet, and an independent art critic, curator of contemporary art and curator of the von Christierson Collection
He is also a researcher in popular cultures and Afro-Cuban ritual arts. He received a degree in Art History at the University of Havana, Cuba, in 1978, and worked as curator and researcher in the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de La Habana from 1978 to 1989. His essays on art and culture have been published extensively in catalogues, magazines and books both in Cuba and abroad from the 1980’s up to the present day. He is curator of Without Masks: Contemporary Afro-Cuban Art, which was exhibited at the Johannesburg Art Gallery, South Africa, May-August 2010. In May 2011 he co-curated the exhibition of installations José Bedia, Nomadismos, in the Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno, CAAM, in the Canary Islands, Spain, and is the author of the accompanying publication of the same name. As a poet, he has published a book of poems entitled Muá (Editorial Colmillo Blanco, Lima, Perú, 1988), as well as “artist books” and limited editions with important Cuban artists like José Bedia, Julio Girona, Gustavo Acosta, Carlos Garaicoa, Lázaro Saavedra and Ibrahim Miranda. He is a member of the International Association of Art Critic (AICA Southern Caribbean) and UNEAC. He lives and works in Havana, Cuba.
Researcher and curator African Cultural Center “Fernando Ortiz” in Santiago de Cuba
Ada Lescay (Santiago de Cuba, 1991) is a researcher and curator. She has a bachelor in art history, Universidad de Oriente, Santiago de Cuba. Recently, she obtained a diploma in Anthropology, Cuban Institute of Anthropology, La Habana. In this moment she is doing a Master in Cuban and Caribbean Studies. She is interested in topics concerning colonialism, coloniality, racism, cultural discrimination and their implications in art visuals expressions.
Since 2014 she works at the African Cultural Center “Fernando Ortiz” in Santiago de Cuba. She is one of the specialists of the Patrimony Department. She has worked as curator in this institution. She worked on exhibitions like: Convergent Extremes, Escape to Ocean, Faces, Scenes and Fidel and Africa. She has written several texts for catalogs such as: Reticular Connections, XXV Anniversary of Namibia Liberation, Africa has woman´s name, The destiny of navigator, Vodú Rituals, Gullah Heritage. She has worked with artist like Jorge Luis Hernández Pouyú, Pedro Luis Ramirez García, Waldo Regüeiferos, and Raquel Epam. In this moment she is organizing an exhibition by the artist Alberto Lescay Merencio.
She has various publications such as “Approaching the exhibit of Christopher Colombus to Junkanoo”, “Intertextuality in the resistance space”, “The Conceptual, the Descriptive and the Systemic in the Studies on Cuban Religions of African Origin”.
Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the New Orleans Museum of Art (Noma), New Orleans
Katie Pfohl has served as the Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the New Orleans Museum of Art since June 2015. She completed her Ph.D. in American Art at Harvard University in 2014, and has a wide range of curatorial experience including positions at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. In 2006, she completed the Whitney Independent Study Program in New York. Upcoming projects include a solo presentation for the Puerto Rican artist Carlos Rolón entitled Carlos Rolón: Outside/In, which explores the rich cultural and artistic connections between New Orleans, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Changing Course: Reflections on New Orleans Histories, which brings together seven contemporary artists to reflect on forgotten or marginalized histories of New Orleans. In 2015, Pfohl visited Cuba to attend the Havana Biennial with a group of scholars and curators, and much of her work at NOMA has explored New Orleans’ ties to Latin America and the Caribbean, from an upcoming presentation of NOMA’s collection of Op and kinetic art from Latin America to projects with contemporary artists like Carlos Rolón.
