In collaboration with Amsterdam Art, initiator and organizer of the Amsterdam Art Weekend, the Mondriaan Fund will invite 10 international curators to visit the event. This annual three-day art festival highlights the role of Amsterdam as a catalyst for new and up-coming artistic talent. Key institutions such as renowned post- graduate art residencies, galleries and museums will be visited in Amsterdam.

This year’s Amsterdam Art Weekend will take place from 21 – 24 November 2019. Amsterdam Art Weekend brings an extensive and exciting program, showcasing the newest developments in contemporary art at over more than 40 of Amsterdam’s most cutting edge venues.

21-22.11 – Colette Barbier
Director Fondation entreprise Ricard in Paris

Since opening in Paris in 1998, the Fondation d’entreprise Ricard has been actively contributing to the development of French art scenes at national and international levels. Having no collection of its own, its identity is shaped by the people who infuse it with life day-to-day: artists, curators, authors, intellectuals. In this way, it reflects the diversity of artistic creation, its pulse beating to the rhythm of art’s variations.

Convinced that art provides a path to freedom and to living together better, the Fondation d’entreprise Ricard aims to promote all of today’s forms of artistic creation, making it accessible to everyone, free of charge. To this end, it runs a rich programme of exhibitions and events, an exacting editorial policy, numerous off-site events, and supports a wide variety of art projects. In 1999, it created the Fondation d’entreprise Ricard Prize, the first to recognise young artists on contemporary French scene.

21-24.11 – Stephanie Cristello
Artistic director EXPO Chicago, the International Exposition of Contemporary & Modern Art

Stephanie Cristello is a writer and curator living and working in Chicago, Illinois. She is currently the artistic director of EXPO Chicago, and the director and curator of Chicago Manual Style. She was previously the Senior Editor US for ArtSlant, and is the founding Editor-in-Chief of THE SEEN, Chicago’s International Journal of Contemporary & Modern Art. Her writing has been published in the London-based publications ArtReviewElephant Magazine and Frieze Magazine, as well as BOMB MagazineOSMOSPortable Gray, published by the University of Chicago Press, and Mousse (forthcoming), as well as numerous exhibition catalogues nationally and internationally. She graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2013 with a Liberal Arts Thesis in the Visual Critical Studies Department. Her forthcoming book, Barbara Kasten: Architecture and Film 2015–2020, with contributors including Hans-Ulrich Obrist, will be published by Skira and the publication Theodora Allen: Saturnine will be published by Motto Books in 2020.

20-24.11 – Laurie Ann Farrell
Senior Curator Dallas Contemporary

Laurie Ann Farrell is currently senior curator at Dallas Contemporary. She was previously Head of Modern and Contemporary Art Department and Senior Curator at the Detroit Institute of Arts from 2016 to 2019. In this role she made numerous acquisitions from artists such as Barkley L. Hendricks, Nicholas Hlobo, Rashid Johnson, Ebony G. Patterson, Cornelia Parker, Robin Rhode, Do Ho Suh, Carrie Mae Weems and others in an effort to broaden the collection. In December 2018 she curated Ruben & Isabel Toledo: Labor of Love featuring new works made in response to the DIA collections and Diego Rivera’s Detroit Industry Murals.
She started her career in 1999 at the Museum for African Art in New York where she was the first curator of contemporary art. Highlight exhibitions include the group exhibitions Personal Affects: Power and Poetics in Contemporary South African Art (2004) and Looking Both Ways: Art of the Contemporary African Diaspora (2003). From 2007 to 2016 Farrell was executive director of exhibitions at the Savannah College of Art and Design.

In 2006, she organized the American participation at the inaugural The Luanda Triennale with support and funding provided by the U.S. Department of State. Farrell received the Abraaj Capital Art Prize with artist Kader Attia in 2010, the ArtTable New Leadership award in 2011, and the Southeast Museum Conference Museum Leadership Award in 2015. Widely published in art journals, Farrell has lectured throughout the Americas, Africa, Asia and Europe.

21-24.11 – Jacob Fabricius (cancelled)
Artistic director Busan Biennale 2020 and director Kunsthal Aarhus

Jacob Fabricius is a Danish-based exhibition curator who currently serves as artistic director for Kunsthal Aarhus in the Danish city of Aarhus. Established in 1917, Kunsthal Aarhus is the city’s sole art center and one of the oldest such institutions in Denmark and Europe. Fabricius is also active as a board member of the Danish Arts Foundation’s Committee for Visual Arts. His career includes stints as associated curator at Cneai in Paris (2015–2016), artistic director at Copenhagen’s Kunsthal Charlottenborg (2013–2014), artistic director of Malmö Konsthall in Malmö, Sweden (2008–2013), and curator of CASM in Barcelona, Spain (2006–2008).

Jacob Fabricius has established his career as an internationally acclaimed curator with over two decades working at art institutions throughout Europe, including Denmark, Spain, Sweden, and France. In particular, he has experimented with diverse artistic methodologies combining art, culture, and communities, regularly organizing exhibitions reflecting societal contexts and projects that involve themselves in public spaces. Some of the major exhibitions he has planned recently include SUPERFLEX’s We Are All In The Same Boat, Miami, USA (2018), Gillian Wearing’s A Real Danish Family, Copenhagen, Denmark (2017), and the 6th Contour Biennial of Moving Images, Mechelen, Belgium (2013).

20-24.11 – Bernardo Follini

Bernardo Follini is a curator based in Turin, Italy. He graduated in Science of Cultural Heritage at the Università Cattolica Milan with a thesis on the Dadaist and situationist legacy in artist’s books by Ed Ruscha. In 2016 he co-founded Il Colorificio, a curatorial collective and project space in Milan, together with Michele Bertolino and Giulia Gregnanin. Since 2017 he is assistant curator at Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo. He is currently tutor in Cultural Studies and Curatorial Practice at CAMPO – Curatorial Course of Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo. His research is recently focused on performativity, construction of sexuality and new representations of subjectivities – ranging from artistic practice to post-pornography – as theoretical frame of The Solar Anus (2019 – 2020), a year-long programme by Il Colorificio about sex and self-display.

Among his recent projects: the group show Brazil (Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin, 2018); with Il Colorificio: Flashing and Flashing! (MAXXI Museo Nazionale delle Arti del XXI Secolo, Rome, 2019), Temporary Office for Curatorial Consulting (The Modern Institute, Glasgow, 2017).

Anne Lacoste is a Business School graduate and holds a doctorate in Art History from Sorbonne University where her thesis focused on the beginnings of photography combined with classical sciences in the East. Following five years at Christie’s in Paris and London, she began her career as a curator at the Photography Department of the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles in 2005. She then moved on to the role of Exhibitions Curator at the Elysée Museum in Lausanne from 2011 to 2017. Her exhibitions and publications cover the history of photography – from the monographs of Felice Beato, the Nadars, Paul Strand, Irving Penn, Philippe Halsman and Martine Franck, to more general portrait studies, the Photomaton, the history of the slide, American documentary photography and the emerging international scene. Her journey has provided the opportunity to work on significant photographic archive collections such as those from the Library of the Institut de France, the iconographic collection from the Canton of Vaud, the Polish graphic designer Wojciech Zamecznik and the artist Jean Dubuffet.

Director of Spike Island in Bristol

Robert Leckie previously was curator and head of programmes at Gasworks in London, where he led the exhibitions, residencies, and public programmes from 2011 to 2018. He has written for Afterall, Rhizome and Mousse, among other publications, and is a visiting lecturer at the Royal College of Art, Goldsmiths, and the University of the Arts in London.

Pablo Martinez has worked as head of programing at the MACBA since 2016 and as co-director of the Independent Studies Program of MACBA in 2017-18 and 2019-20. He has been in charge of Education and Public Activities at the CA2M, Móstoles, Madrid (2009-2016) and associate lecturer in the History of Contemporary Art at the Fine Arts faculty of the Complutense University of Madrid (2011-2015). He edits the et al. series of essays (MACBA-Arcàdia). Moreover, he is part of the editorial board of L’Internationaleonline. He is editorial secretary of the academic research journal Re-visiones and member of the research and action group on education, art and cultural practices Las Lindes. He has edited published publications including Arte actual. Lecturas para un espectador inquieto (Art today: readings for a concerned spectator, CA2M, 2011) and No sabíamos lo que hacíamos. Lecturas para una educación situada (We didn’t know what we were doing: readings for a situated education, CA2M, 2016). He has curated exhibitions by Werker (2014) and Adelita Husni-Bey (2016), and has collaborated in numerous collective publications including Visualidades críticas y ecologías culturales (Critical visualities and cultural ecologies, Brumaria, 2018), Patricia Esquivias. 21-23.11 – Marcel Schwierin
Director Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art in Oldenburg

Marcel Schwierin is a curator, filmmaker, and co-founder of the Werkleitz Biennial, the experimental film database cinovid, and the Arab Shorts festival in Cairo. His films include The Images (experimental, 1994) and Eternal Beauty (feature-length documentary, 2003). He has regularly curated for the Werkleitz Biennial, the Goethe-Institut, and the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, among others. From 2010–2015 he was the curator of film and video for the transmediale festival in Berlin. Since 2015 he is has been the director, together with Edit Molnár, of the Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art in Oldenburg.

21-24.11 – Luis Silva
Director, together with João Mourão, of Kunsthalle Lissabon

Luis Silva co-founded contemporary art institution Kunsthalle Lissabon in 2009 together with João Mourão. A selection of recent shows Silva curated includes solos by Caroline Mesquita, Engel Leonardo, Sol Calero, Irene Kopelman and Naufus Ramírez-Figueroa, as well as group shows at institutions such as Extra City (Antwerp), David Roberts Art Foundation (London) and MACE (Elvas). Besides his curatorial practice, Luís Silva is also a contributing editor of CURA. magazine and co-editor of the ongoing book series Performing the Institution(al), addressing recent developments in institutional practice. He co-curated ZONA MACO SUR (2015 – 2017), the solo projects section of Mexico City’s contemporary art fair, and he is co-curating Artissima’s new section Disegni (2017 – ), dedicated to recent developments in drawing.

21-22.11 – Claire Mouléne
Curator Palais de Tokyo and co-curator Lyon Biennale 2019

Claire Moulène has been a Curator at the Palais de Tokyo since 2016, and she is the Editor-in-chief of Initiales, a review published by the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Lyon. She is part of the curatorial team of the 15th edition The Lyon Contemporary Art Biennale in 2019. She previously co-animated the arts section of Les Inrockuptibles for 13 years and she was a correspondent for Artforum. Moulène has also been art director for Prix Meurice pour l’art contemporain since 2012 and she co-founded the discussion platform Dear Artist. Claire Moulène will join the art weekend at her own account.
