In September 2014 a group of curators from the Netherlands and Belgium visited South-Korea and Japan during the Orientation trip organized by the Mondriaan Fund.
As follow-up of the trip a group of curators from both countries will visit the Netherlands and Belgium. (In collaboration with Flanders Arts Institute & the Netherlands Embassy in Tokyo)
Curator Yokohama Museum of Art, Yokohama, Japan
Taro Amano is the Curator in Chief at the Yokohama Museum of Art. He has organized numerous exhibitions on contemporary art and photography including Japanese and Asian art, Like Yoshitomo Nara, Scream Against the Sky, Louise Bourgeois. He was also the curator of the Yokohama Triennale, 2005 and head of curatorial team of 2011, 2014.
Curator Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, Japan
He completed a Master’s (art history) at Goldsmiths’ College, University of London. Kondo started to work at Mori Art Museum in 2003. He curated solo shows by Meiro Koizumi (2009) and Melvin Moti (2014); co-curated “History in the Making: A Retrospective of the Turner Prize” (2008), “Roppongi Crossing 2010” (2010), “Arab Express: The Latest Art from the Arab World” (2012) and “Andy Warhol: 15 Minutes Eternal” (2014). Kondo was guest curator for the art fair ARCO in 2006 and curated a video art show with young Japanese artists for Sala 1, a non-profit gallery in Rome in 2010. He was a visiting lecturer at Hosei University in Tokyo (- 2014) and is currently Research Fellow at Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum for Contemporary Art in Berlin.
Curator National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), Seoul, South-Korea
Associate Curator, He has been working for the MMCA, Korea since 1999. His major was painting and art history. He completed research studies at TATE Britain (GB) in 2005(6 months) and LACMA (U.S.A.) in 2011(2 months). He has specialty in Korean contemporary painting and sculpture. Recent exhibitions and project include, <Korean Beauty: Two Kinds of Nature> (2014/Seoul, Korea), <Hanjin Shipping Box Project: Do-Ho Suh>, <Uram Choi: Hidden Shadow of the Moon)(Site Specific Art Project, 2013/Seoul, Korea), <Who is Alice?> (Collateral Evert of the 55th Venice Biennale, 2013/Venice, Italy). <Dream Walking in the Magical Reality> (2012/Gwacheon, Korea) <Young Korean Artists: I AM AN ARTIST> (2008/Gwacheon, Korea), and etc.
Co-director Alternative space Pool, Seoul, South-Korea
Sunghee Lee received her undergraduate degree in Fine Art and M.A. in Art History from Sungshin Women’s University in Seoul. Later, she worked as an editor at Art in Culture magazine and then as Researcher for Korea for the Hong Kong-based Asia Art Archive (AAA). Her work at AAA primarily involved documenting the Korean art scene and archiving art publications and materials. Currently, she heads <the ludic edge>, a translation collective of several U.S.-based translators and editors that is engaged in translations of a variety of Korean art publications. In addition, she is involved in individual research projects, research focusing on archiving issues, and exhibition curating. She participated in the 2013 DOOSAN Curator Workshop, co-curating BONUP: Art as Livelihood (DOOSAN Gallery Seoul, 2014) and also publishing the accompanying book on the timely topic of “art and labor” in conjunction with the publishing house workroom press. As a participant in the Pilot Project by Project Via, she organized the exhibition Low Burn: Low Voice connecting Hong Kong and Seoul (Art Space Pool, Seoul, 2014). Her inquiry in this exhibition centers around how to facilitate the exchange of individual local issues with other regions, and how to effectively translate such local issues and deliver them to platforms outside of a region—and, ultimately, whether this proposition is even possible.
Curator of Samuso, Seoul, South-Korea
Hyejin Lim received her M.A. in Art History from Ewha Womans University (2005). Lim has worked at Seomi Gallery and SSamzie Space, and now works at the exhibition team of Samuso. She made the very first exhibition of the REAL DMZ PROJECT in 2012 as a member of its curatorial team and has since sat as director of the REAL DMZ PROJECT Committee and has been in charge of its general management and programming. Chief curator Teien Museum, Tokyo, Japan
Akio Seki is the chief of curatorial section at Tokyo metropolitan Teien art Museum (TTM) and an art historian on Jewellery. He curated an exhibitions on contemporary jewellery and design which entitled “Catalysis for life: New Language of Dutch Art & Design” in 2010 which featuring Ted Noten, Maarten Baas and Martijn Engelbregt at Museum of contemporary art, Tokyo. He is a guest lecturer at Tokyo University of Arts since 2005. He was the chair of JJA Jewellery Design Awards (2010-12).
Nathalie Boseul Shin
Curator Total Museum, Seoul, South-Korea
Nathalie Boseul SHIN is chief curator of Total Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul. She studied philosophy at Ewha Woman’s University and aesthetics at Hongik University (M.A). Currently, she is a Ph.D candidate in Hongik University. Since 1997, she started her curatorial career in Korea, engaging various exhibition planning and art projects. In 2000, she began as a curator with an expertise of media art after working for art center nabi. Further, she developed her experience at Seoul International Media Art Biennale 2004, leading exhibition team as manager. She has been working at Total Museum of Contemporary Art since 2007. She curated Muntadas: Asian Protocols, News after the News (Dan Perjovschi), Postcapical Archive: 1989-2001 (Daniel G. Andujar), Danish Video Art Exhibition Subtle Whispering, etc. Since 2010, she has been organizing various annual international projects such as Roadshow, Playground in island (Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia), the show must go on.
Director Arts Maebashi, Maebashi, Japan
He was co-curator Aichi Triennale 2013 Beautiful New World: Contemporary Visual Culture from Japan (“798” Dashanzi Art District and Guangdong Museum of Art, 2007) and Media_City Seoul 2010. Also he was artistic director of Festival for Arts and Social Technology Yokohama [CREAM] 2009 and curator for Beppu Art Project 2012 and co-editor of “From the Postwar to the Postmodern, Art in Japan 1945-1989: Primary Documents“(Museum of Modern Art New York/ Duke University Press, 2012).
As a senior curator at Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo (MOT), he has curated the exhibition Tadashi Kawamata: Walkway (2008). He worked for NTT InterCommunication Center (ICC) in Tokyo, where he organized the exhibitions Art Meets Media: Adventure in Perception (2005) and Possible Futures: Japanese Postwar Art and Technology (2005).
He is a founding member of Arts Initiative Tokyo (AIT), a nonprofit, independent collective of curators and art administrators based in Tokyo with the mission to provide a new public forum for contemporary art.
