FAQ Art Heritage Presentation

Below you will find the FAQ for the Art Heritage Presentation grant. Is your question not listed? Please contact one of our grant officers.

Who can apply, and what conditions do applying institutions need to meet?

Cultural institutions focused on presenting cultural heritage and/or visual arts may submit an application. A cultural institution must be based in the Netherlands or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom, and this must also be the location of the activities. The cultural institution is a legal entity or collective of legal entities, not aimed at generating profits or sales. Institutions for art education and post academic institutions are excluded from applying.

Cultural institutions are understood to include museums, art centres and venues, archives engaged in public presentation, and other art and heritage initiatives that focus on presenting cultural heritage and/or visual art.

Why does the Arts Heritage Presentation grant have two categories?

As a national cultural fund, the Mondriaan Fund aims to do justice to the diversity of the field. It therefore supports presentations by institutions with a specific, at times more regional, focus, as well as those with a national or international profile.

For this reason, this grant distinguishes between institutions with a predominantly (supra-)regional profile and those with a predominantly national or international profile. Each category has its own specific set of assessment criteria, tailored to the nature of the institution.

How do I know which category to choose?

The applicant selects the category they consider most appropriate, and justifies this choice in the application:

  1. Category for institutions with a predominantly (supra-)regional profile: up to approximately € 3 million in average annual total revenue (incl. structural subsidies) over the past 3 years, and/or a predominantly regional reach in terms of audience and press.
  2. Category for institutions with a predominantly national or international profile: from approximately € 3 million in average annual total revenue (incl. structural subsidies) over the past 3 years, and/or predominantly national or international reach in terms of audience and press.

If, as an applicant, you believe that a different category is more appropriate than the one indicated by the above thresholds for annual total revenue and reach, it is your responsibility to provide a convincing justification for why the selected category is the most appropriate. If, based on the application, the Mondriaan Fund is of the opinion that a different category is more appropriate, it may decide to assess the application accordingly.

How does the advisory committee of the Mondriaan Fund assess whether the activities for which I am applying are non-standard?

The applicant must explain the non-standard nature of the project in the project plan.

The advisory committee then assesses the criterion Non-standard presentation:

  1. For applications submitted by institutions with a predominantly (supra)regional profile: to what extent does the application demonstrate that the presentation offers added value within the applicant’s own context, and is non-standard for the institution itself?
  2. For applications submitted by institutions with a predominantly national or international profile: to what extent does the application demonstrate that the presentation offers added value and is non-standard within the field of contemporary visual art and/or cultural heritage?

When the advisory committee gives a positive assessment of the non-standard nature of the presentation, it will also evaluate the other criteria. Applications are only eligible for a contribution if this criterion has been assessed with at least a satisfactory rating.

Are artist's fees eligible for funding under the Arts Heritage Presentation grant?

Yes, artist’s fees are eligible for funding under the Art Heritage Presentation grant. These costs are therefore part of the variable project costs on which the maximum contribution is calculated.

If you have applied for the Art Heritage Presentation grant, you cannot simultaneously apply for the Artist’s Fee grant for the same project. Only if your application for the Art Heritage Presentation grant is rejected may you apply for the Artist’s Fee grant, provided the institution meets the eligibility criteria. Please also take into account the processing times of both grants and the start date of your project. In the budget, use one of these two calculators for your fair fee calculations.

If contemporary visual artists are involved with the application, an explanation of work and professional practice is requested. How detailed should the explanation of the artists’ practice be?

The explanation of work and professional practice should not exceed 10 pages. If only a few artists are involved, you may keep it shorter. Make sure all relevant information is included, but keep it concise and to the point.
