About Almost a word, 2025-2026
Annabelle Binnerts uses language as both a subject and a medium. Her work includes murals, drawings, books and textiles. In the series Almost a word (2025–2026), Binnerts explores the physical aspects of language, in which the mouth, voice, lips and tongue become vehicles of meaning. The works focus on the fleeting, physical elements of speech, such as inhaling and exhaling, sighs and gasping for breath: expressions that can convey meaning without being words themselves. Based on the idea that the body, just like a book, is a vehicle for language, Binnerts seeks to make the transience of the spoken word visible and tangible. Distorted and fading words seem trapped between the moment they are spoken and the moment when, together with the breath, they dissolve back into the air.
