Balthazar Lovay

Balthazar Lovay is the Artistic Director of Fri Art, Kunsthalle Fribourg in Switzerland since August 2013. He is the co-founder, together with Lionel Bovier and Fabrice Stroun, of the independent art space and editions publishing house Hard Hat in Geneva. They had worked with artists like Valentin Carron, Wade Guyton, Mai-Thu Perret, Josh Smith, Sylvie Fleury, Olivier Mosset or HR Giger.

For Fri Art, he has curated solo exhibitions by Cameron Rowland, Robert Heinecken, Kathe Burkhart, Hannah Weinberger, Jos de Gruyter & Harald Thys, Ferdinand Kriwet as well as group shows like the historical « Film Implosion » that maped, for the first time, an history of experimental cinema in Switzerland. He is also involved in the experimental music field. In the last ten years he has organized live concerts by: Keiji Haino, Marc Ribot, Mayhem, Stephen O’Malley, Caspar Brötzmann Massaker, Acid Mother Temple, Antipop Consortium, Konono N.1, Laibach, Peter Rehberg,  among many others. He is a regular contributor to swiss art schools in Lausanne (ECAL), Geneva (HEAD) and Sierre (ECAV). He is a member of the current Pro Helvetia Jury for the Swiss Pavillon at the Venice Biennale.His next project at Fri Art is the exhibition « A Retrospective of Closed Exhibitions» that he co-curates with english-french curator Mathieu Copeland. In this context, they are editing a major publication about the history of the Anti Museum, an Anthology that will be released by Verlag Walther König on November 19th, 2016. In 2017 curated the first retrospective of Dutch painter Peter Schuyff both at Fri Art and at Le Consortium, Dijon, France.
