De Amerikaan Brendan Jaks (1983) wordt gefascineerd door de vorm en functie van een object. Wat vertellen die objecten over het tijdperk en de context waarin ze zijn gemaakt? Welke symbolische waardes worden eraan toekend? Deze inhoudelijke vragen leiden tot sculpturen en installaties waarin Jaks, net als een klassiek beeldhouwer, nadenkt over ruimte, vorm en materiaal, al is dat materiaal geen brons of gips maar rubber, piepschuim of plastic.
Hij experimenteert met het afgieten van specifieke architectonische elementen in verschillende materialen zoals aluminium, epoxy, plastic en polyurethaan en reconstrueert objecten. “The form and function of objects in relation to the state of technology and the socio-political climate of a period is what I find fascinating and I am constantly looking for new ways of exploring this as a strategy to produce new works.”
De zwarte piepschuim wandsculpturen op Prospects & Concepts zijn gebaseerd op verpakkingsmateriaal van LCD televisies. “The works are sculpted by hand, and heat-treated to mimic the source form, resulting in an object that both resembles the original and becomes something alien to this world”. De fluorescerende epoxy sculpturen op de grond verleiden door kleur en materiaal en roepen vragen op over een specifieke functie. Het zijn volgens Jaks ‘game pieces’ “to be continuously rearranged throughout the exhibition, with the intention of adding use value to an otherwise static sculpture.”
