Kanazawa Kodama

Job title: Independent contemporary art curator Country: Japan Visiting period: 13 - 19 April Visiting year: 2026 Part of Visit by art professionals from Japan

After working for 12 years in public art museums, she began working independently in 2013. Special Project Director at ICA Kyoto. Code-a-Machine (Kodama Kanazawa + Shinichiro Masui) Co-founder, artistic director. CIMAM member.

Her curatorial work addresses issues of globalization and post colonialism, including cultural imperialism in Japan’s modern and contemporary history, focusing on how societal and historical shifts alter human perceptions. She explores the psychological difficulties these changes bring, seeking potential solutions through curating. Kanazawa collaborates with artists across a wide spectrum of mediums, from new media art and installations to painting and crafts. Her curatorial practice often involves experimental approaches, working to better communicate artists’ work. A notable method she uses is presenting artworks within the framework of creative narratives. Examples of this approach can be seen in projects such as “Gekiryo Kyoto: Kyoto Wander – A Transient Journey to the Everlasting” (Kyoto, 2024), “In Praise of Soils” (Pearl Art Museum, Shanghai, 2023), and “Novel Shima Takeshi” (part of the “Stranger Than Fiction,” Towada Art Center, 2019).
