Mandy Franca

Mandy Franca is a multidisciplinary artist working in a wide range of media, including painting, photography, print, collage, sculpture, video, audio and installations. She uses photographic images taken with her smartphone, with handmade marks forming a recurring element. In her practice, she explores themes including distance, time, connection and identity, often in relation to the impact of digitalization and globalization. Her work is closely linked to personal experiences, shaped by her upbringing in a multicultural society and the physical distance between her and her family in Curaçao.

Vulnerability and resilience are significant starting points for her work in periods of illness, during which she is housebound. The sky serves as an important motif, both as a connection to the outside world and as a reminder of what remains out of reach. The same sky that connects her with her family also emphasizes the geographical distance between them. Franca explores how individual and collective identities develop in an increasingly connected world. Her work has been exhibited in cities including London, Amsterdam and New York. She was a resident at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten (2022–2024) and presented a solo exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam in 2026.

About On Being Light and Liquid, 2024

During a period of illness, when she was largely confined to bed, Mandy Franca observed the clouds from her window. Their constant movement contrasted with her own immobility. Sky and clouds, traditionally symbols of freedom, thus became a starting point for questioning the limits of the body and the illusion of freedom in society. In her multidisciplinary work with textiles, video, sound and sculpture, Franca explores the relationship between the body and its environment, interior and exterior space, and verticality and horizontality. In later projects, she deepens this exploration by focusing on breathing and the interconnectedness of the human body and the world around us. With every inhalation and exhalation, the body exchanges air with its surroundings, making us physically aware of just how much we are part of a greater whole.
