Maria Arusoo

Maria Arusoo is an Estonian curator. Since 2013 she has been director of the Center for Contemporary Arts Estonia and commissioner of the Estonian Pavilion at the Venice Biennial.

Arusoo began curating in 2005, working at an artist-run gallery project in Berlin. In 2007, she relocated to London. In 2010, she graduated from Goldsmiths College, University of London with a Master’s degree in Aural and Visual Cultures. Arusoo has been a visiting lecturer at the Estonian Academy of Arts and at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). Arusoo has published articles in numerous leading newspapers and cultural publications in Estonia and has been the Editor and Co-editor for numerous books and catalogues published by the CCA, Lugemik and Sternberg Press. She has also collaborated with the Estonian National Broadcasting.

Currently she is curator in residence at Kumu Art Museum working on the exhibition about soviet period female print makers opening in spring 2023.

Recent curatorial projects include exhibition A-tishoo, A-tishoo, We All Fall Down at the Estonian Contemporary Art Museum (2019) together with CCA team, Mutant at the Kumu Artmuseum (2019), theatre play It Stays as it is (2020) and WORKSHOP (2019) at Kanuti Gildi Saal, performance marathon Hydrogen Nights at Kim Contemporary Art Center, Riga (2018), exhibition Soft Scrub, Hard Body, Liquid Presence at Art in General Gallery New York (2018); CORPORATE OCCULT_let’s talk about the body baby, NU Performance festival (2016)
