Marieke van Bommel is a passionate museum director and cultural strategist redefining the role of museums in the 21st century. Since 2022, she has led Wereldmuseum (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Leiden, Nijmegen), championing inclusion, global citizenship, and the decolonization of collections.
Marieke’s mission is to challenge Western norms, redress historical injustices, and transform museums into spaces of justice and reflection. She sees collections not as possessions, but as responsibilities — and believes museum work is not about projects, but about relationships. She poses fundamental questions: What do we preserve, and why? And who gets to decide?
