Voucher Art Event: Mexico Art Week 2027

Who is eligible?

Visual artists from the Netherlands or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom with at least 1 year of professional practice.

For what?

The Voucher Art Event aims to strengthen the international position of visual artists from the Netherlands and the Caribbean part of the Kingdom by encouraging their participation in major international events. Through this grant, the Mondriaan Fund offers visual artists the opportunity to strengthen their international network and gain a better understanding of the international visual arts field, while also supporting their international profile. A suitable event is selected for this purpose each year. 

In 2027, the Voucher Art Event enables artists from the Netherlands and the Caribbean part of the Kingdom to explore the art field surrounding Mexico Art Week, gain a deeper understanding of it and expand their network. Mexico Art Week attracts international curators, gallery owners, private collectors and museum directors, many of whom are from the United States. The participating artists therefore have the opportunity to meet a diverse range of art professionals. Mexico City is an important hub within the Latin American visual arts field. This influential position is one of the reasons why Mexico Art Week has become such an important destination for galleries and artists from the Netherlands and the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. In addition to 3 art fairs – Zona Maco, Feria Material and Salón Acme – the week features numerous museum exhibition openings and special presentations in which the Mexico City art scene plays an active role.

Mexico Art Week takes place from 3 to 7 February 2027. The Mondriaan Fund is making 15 travel vouchers and admission passes available.

A meeting for the selected artists will be organised at the Mondriaan Fund office on Friday, 20 November 2026. Attendance is expected, as the meeting provides more information about the programme and offers an opportunity to meet the other participants in advance.

How much?

Visual artists who are awarded the Voucher Art Event for a visit to Mexico Art Week 2027 will receive:  

• an admission to the Zona Maco preview days;
• participate in a programme curated by the Mondriaan Fund during Mexico Art Week 2027; 
• receive an invitation to a network event organised in collaboration with the Dutch Embassy in Mexico City; 
• stay in a hotel booked by the Mondriaan Fund from 2 to 7 February 2027;  
• receive a contribution of € 1.300,- towards travel costs to and from Mexico.

How and when to apply?

Visual artists can submit an application via the ‘Mexico Art Week 2027 (English version)’ application form until 10 September, 16:00 (Dutch time zone) / 10:00 (Caribbean time zone). Applicants are required to submit a CV and motivation statement.

You need an account to submit an application. If you do not already have one, please request an account via the website. Applications are assessed by an internal advisory committee. Mondriaan Fund grants cannot be awarded retroactively. The selected applicants will be notified mid-October.

The following is based on the  Regeling Voucher Manifestatie Mexico Art Week 2027 (in Dutch), as published in the Staatscourant. 

Conditions

• The grant is available to visual artists with at least 1 year of demonstrable professional practice. The following applies: 
  • If the artist has completed a Bachelor’s degree programme (HBO) with a visual arts curriculum, the date of graduation is considered the start of the professional practice. If there is an interim period between graduation from the Bachelor’s programme and the start of a Master’s programme, this period is counted as part of the professional practice. 
  • If the artist has not completed a Bachelor’s degree programme (HBO) with a visual arts curriculum, the date on which they first presented work within the professional art field is considered the start of the professional practice. 
• The submitted CV must demonstrate that, at the time of application, the applicant is artistically active in the visual arts field and, in that capacity, embedded in the professional visual arts field in the Netherlands and/or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. 
• Grants are not awarded to applicants who, at the time of application or during the grant period, are enrolled in education programmes such as Bachelor’s, Master’s or postdoctoral programmes. This also applies to participation in programmes at post-academic institutions and PhD programmes. An exception is made for part-time programmes, other than Bachelor’s programmes, involving fewer than 20 hours a week. 
• The artist must be available to stay in Mexico City from 2 to 7 February 2027 and participate in the programme organised by the Mondriaan Fund, attend the networking event organised in collaboration with the Dutch Embassy and any other activities organised by the Fund during the visit. 
• Following the visit, the artist is required to submit a written evaluation of their visit to Mexico Art Week. 

Assessment

Mondriaan Fund staff review the submitted application and supporting documents for completeness and assess whether they meet the conditions. If the application is complete, it is submitted to the internal committee that advises on awarding the Voucher Art Event: Mexico Art Week.

The committee assesses applications using the following criteria: 

1. Quality of the strategy for internationalising the practice 
   Does the artist demonstrate a convincing commitment to strengthening the international position of their practice, and is this likely to increase its visibility within the international visual arts field? 
2. Quality of the motivation for participation 
   • Does the artist provide a convincing motivation for the importance of visiting Mexico Art Week through the Voucher Art Event? Does this align with the artist’s international ambitions?  
   • Is there a convincing and practical strategy and plan of action for expanding the artist’s international network during the visit?
