Kunstwerk Kolderveen is a production and research residency, knowledge hub, exhibition and public events venue located in the former iconic old cheese factory of Kolderveen, within the municipality of Meppel, in the province of Drenthe. Their mission is to stimulate and advance arts and culture. They do this by creating a vibrant local and international meeting place in the Drenthe region, facilitating connections between artists and curators, organizations, and public from the Netherlands and beyond.

They are a small, dynamic art institution equipped with offices, technical workshops and a guest accommodation, dedicated to supporting the artistic process. Kunstwerk Kolderveen offers artists and curators the time, space, resources to work individually or collaboratively, inspiring and enabling them to develop new ideas, art projects, as well as to extend their network and visibility to other professionals.

More information

Located in a rural landscape at the border between the province of Overijssel and Drenthe, Kolderveen is a village of just over two hundred people. Turn right as you leave the residency and you end up amongst the reeds and the migratory birds in the watery landscape of De Weerribben-Wieden National Park. Turn left and you head towards the ancient dolmen and forest of the Holtingerveld. This location offers peace and focus in a rural, nature-rich area, opportunities for site-specific or community-sensitive work and connections to local knowledge and skills.

Kunstwerk Kolderveen can support the development and reflection of the resident artist or curator, by facilitating contact with experts or local organizations, organizing studio visits and supporting research and production through the knowledge inside the team.

They offer access to a spacious shared studio/workshop suitable for building and making. This production studio is a large shared studio space with a lot of daylight and equipment to work in wood, metal, 3D printing, etc.

The accommodation consists of a flat with a kitchen/living room, bedroom with two single beds and a baby cot, a WC / shower. The facilities are not wheelchair accessible.

The team of Kunstwerk Kolderveen is part of the Stichting Landfall. They are available Mondays and Tuesdays. At the start of the residency a network dinner will be held to promote the resident and connect them with local professionals. At the end of the residency an open studio / presentation can be organized for the resident to share their process or what they have been working on.

Studio visits tailored to the resident’s practice will be organized through the residency.

For whom

Visual artists and curators can apply for a residency at Kunstwerk Kolderveen. Kolderveen is family friendly and very suitable for an artist with a young child.

We are seeking artists and curators with a critical, contemporary practice, whose work engages with the world around them. We especially welcome proposals with a focus on nature, rural contexts, or those exploring intersections of technology and landscape—reflecting both the qualities of our surroundings and the expertise within our organization.

We are particularly interested in artistic research and research-led practices, artists and curators open to development and dialogue, and practices that benefit from a hands-on, locally engaged setting.

Work period

There is 1 work period available for 3 months:

  • 16 February 2026 to 17 May 2026

How much?

The Mondriaan Fund makes a monthly contribution of € 2.165 available for an artist to help cover travel expenses, material costs and living costs. This sum is intended for 1 person. In addition, the selected resident is expected to pay a 10% personal contribution. The Mondriaan Fund automatically takes this into account in their ultimate subsidy, you do not need to do anything.

If a duo or collaborative partnership is selected for the residency, the total amount increases proportionally to cover the additional travel and living costs for the second applicant.

The contribution to artists based in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom can be increased to meet any higher travel costs. This is looked at per situation.

The costs of renting the studio and living space are paid directly to Kolderveen by the Mondriaan Fund.

General terms and conditions

Selection

The selection is made by an advisory committee. Based on the submitted documents, the advisory committee proposes candidates to the Kunstwerk Kolderveen. They make the final decision on the participants for the residency. An interview may be part of their selection process.*

When you apply for two different residencies within the same call then the quality and development of your oeuvre/(professional) practice and the quality of your cultural entrepreneurship as the artist, curator or viewer is only assessed once. This assessment is therefore valid for both applications.

*Please note! Be aware that the processing time for this selection procedure may exceed three months.

Other grants for residencies in the Netherlands and other countries
Because only 1 or 2 residents can be selected for any given residency during each application round, it is inevitable that many will be disappointed. For this reason, we point out that it is also possible to apply for an Artist Project at a different residency location. The specific Artist Project residency applied for may not be one of those already being offered in the Mondriaan Fund application rounds.
