Odapark (Venray) offers a residency to artists living in the Netherlands to deepen their practice and expand their network. The residencies are part of Borderland Residencies, a Euregional network of art institutions with an in-depth program for artists. The residency period ends with an open studio weekend.

Odapark is located in Venray, North Limburg, in a region that has a ‘raw material’ that the Netherlands is in urgent need of: space. Today, the countryside is seen as a solution to a wide range of urban problems. In this space there are dreams of wind farms, new residential areas, meandering rivers, data centres, migrant worker hotels, food forests, quiet areas, solar meadows, mega stables, TBS clinics and asylum seeker centres. But does the Netherlands have sufficient space to realise these ‘dreams’? In North Limburg, the proposed changes led to strong reactions and emotions among its residents, both positive and negative, sometimes with deep divisions between generations. Odapark actively participates in the discussion by developing (alternative) proposals in which imagination is central.

The residency is particularly interested in artists who want to work on projects for-or with-nature and the surrounding landscape, in the form of installations, material research, performances or audio walks. Odapark provides working and living space near the art centre. Accommodation and transport belonging to the Borderland Residencies programme are also included. Odapark’s artistic team is at your service.

Borderland Residencies

The Euregion Maas-Rhein is a breeding ground for artistic development and reflection. Fifteen art institutions in the Dutch-German border area – including Ludwig Forum Aachen, IKOB Eupen, Greyligt Projects Heerlen, Weltkunstzimmer Düsseldorf, Museum Goch, Internationales Atelierstipendium Mönchengladbach, Museum Van Bommel Van Dam Venlo, Art au Center Liège, and Odapark – work together under the denominator Borderland Residencies. In addition to the individual residencies, the program provides three months of joint moments of deepening and exchange. The Borderland Residencies program consists of multi-day field trips, meetings with curators and institutions, and studio visits on both sides of the border. The program concludes with a joint publication or exhibition.

For whom

This residency programme is intended for multidisciplinary visual artists who see their work in relation to space, time and the environment; the residency also welcomes artists who are open to sharing their practice with other artists, makers and curators. The medium is not subject to restrictions, but the practice does need to be in line with the programme on offer.

The working language of the Borderland Residencies program is English. At the Odapark locations, both Dutch and English are spoken.

For duos and collaborating partners, each person must submit a separate application.

A duo is understood to be 2 artists who consistently produce work together as a single unit. Collaborative partnerships producing work on a more short-term or long-term basis can be considered as duos, as long as they both submit a joint plan that leads to a single result. During the residency, duos or collaborative partners live and work together in the same space.

Work period

There is 1 work period available:

  • 1 September 2026 – 30 November 2026

How much

The Mondriaan Fund makes a monthly contribution of € 2.165 for an artist to help cover travel expenses, material costs and living costs. This sum is intended for 1 person. In addition, the selected resident is expected to pay a 10% personal contribution. The Mondriaan Fund automatically takes this into account in their ultimate subsidy, you do not need to do anything.

If a duo or collaborative partnership is selected for the residency, the total amount increases proportionally to cover the additional travel and living costs for the second applicant.

The contribution to artists based in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom can be increased to meet any higher travel costs. This is looked at per situation.

Application

The deadline for submitting an application for a work period in 2026 is Thursday 11 September 2025 before 16.00 (Dutch time zone) / 11.00 (Caribbean time zone).

Before submitting an application, please see the Residency page for the terms and conditions, application procedure and assessment procedure.

Please also read the terms and conditions applicable to Mondriaan Fund contributions.

General terms and conditions

Selection

The selection is made by an advisory committee. Based on the submitted documents, the advisory committee proposes candidates to Borderland Residencies. They make the final decision on the participants for the residency. An interview may be part of their selection process.*

When you apply for two different residencies within the same call then the quality and development of your oeuvre/(professional) practice and the quality of your cultural entrepreneurship as the artist, curator or viewer is only assessed once. This assessment is therefore valid for both applications.

*Please note! Be aware that the processing time for this selection procedure may exceed three months

Other grants for residencies in the Netherlands and other countries
Because only 1 or 2 residents can be selected for any given residency during each application round, it is inevitable that many will be disappointed. For this reason, we point out that it is also possible to apply for an Artist Project at a different residency location. The specific Artist Project residency applied for may not be one of those already being offered in the Mondriaan Fund application rounds.
