Make Eindhoven

deadline: 01.11.2021

For who: visual artists
What: 2 working periods of 3 months
When: March 1 – May 31, 2022 and September 1 – November 30, 2022

Make Eindhoven has workshops where you can research the possibilities of metal casting, glass processing techniques and graphic techniques. The workshops are designed to work independently where possible. It is not necessary that you already master the techniques. Experienced advisors give you instructions on safety, techniques and tools. They share their knowledge with you and support where necessary.

Make Eindhoven’s expertise lies in, among other things, making different types of molds in which material (especially bronze and aluminium) can be formed. In the field of glass, we offer options for hot glass techniques: slumping, casting and fusing. (Glass blowing is not amongst the options). The graphic workshop offers possibilities for various relief printing, planographic printing, intaglio printing and stencil printing techniques. Large formats are amongst the options, thanks to the large-format screen printing tables, presses and flatbed oven.

This residency period offers opportunities for an exciting trajectory for artists who want to take new steps. There is room for experimentation with and research into the various possibilities of technology and materials. Make Eindhoven offers the unique opportunity to make crossovers under one roof between techniques and materials, and between 2d and 3d. This is in line with the needs of the current generation of makers, who, as mentioned, no longer think in one material, technique or carrier, but use all possible tools and compose their images from an enormous diversity of means and media. In doing so, we do not primarily focus on the development of new materials, but rather on research into new applications of existing materials. The artist resides in a studio of the van Abbemuseum.

  • For whom

Preference is given to artists who have been practicing professionally for some time and who are looking for new challenges to deepen their practice. This research process requires a solid substantive basis in order not to get lost in the amount of opportunities that arise. We are open to artists who have little or no experience with the material and who, without being hindered by technical knowledge, are keen to experiment.

  • Working Periods

There are 2 working periods of 3 months available:

    • February 1st to June 30th 2022
    • September 1st to November 30th 2022

The preference for the period of stay must be indicated in the application form. Every effort will be made to assign the preferred period as much as possible. There is room for 1 artist per period. This working period is subject to change and depends on how the coronavirus develops.

  • Application

The deadline for submitting an application for a working period is November 1, 2021, before 5:00 PM.

Before submitting an application, read the explanation Residency for the terms and conditions, assessment and application procedure. On that page you will also get to the application form. Also read the general terms that apply to contributions from the Mondriaan Fund.

A longlist is drawn up on the basis of the committee’s recommendations. Make Eindhoven then selects the 2 artists.
If it appears that no suitable candidate can be selected from the applications, the advisory committee can nominate candidates itself.

  • How Much

The Mondriaan Fund provides a grant of €2,000 per month for travel, material and accommodation costs. This amount is intended for 1 person. In addition, a personal contribution of at least 10%, or €200 per month, is expected from the chosen resident. The applicant must indicate how the personal contribution is financed. This can be your own investment, but also a contribution from third parties, an interest-free loan from the Kwadraat Fund or a contribution through crowdfunding.

If a duo or partnership is selected for a guest studio, the amount for the guest studio will be increased by an amount for additional travel costs and a proportional amount for the accommodation costs for the other applicant. The rent of the studio/accommodation, supervision and presentation are not included in the subsidy amount and will be paid by the Mondriaan Fund.
