For whom?
This grant is intended for publicly accessible heritage and visual arts institutions such as museums, archives with a public function and art platforms on Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, Sint Eustatius and Sint Maarten.
For what?
A contribution can be requested for hiring an employee. Applications can be made for any position within the organisation. This concerns a new employment contract. With this grant, the Mondriaan Fund wants to contribute to the deployment of heritage and visual arts professionals in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom and stimulate knowledge development, transfer of knowledge and cooperation between the islands.
How much?
The contribution from the Mondriaan Fund is a maximum of 95%, which is € 50,000 per position. The own contribution is at least 5%, which is € 2,632.
At least € 40,000 from the contribution of the Mondriaan Fund must be spent on the employee’s gross salary costs and related employer charges. The remaining part of the fund contribution may be spent on professional development costs (maximum € 5,000) and travel and accommodation costs (maximum € 5,000) for the employee during the subsidy period. The available budget for the open call for Caribbean Heritage Employees is € 1,000,000.
The application can be submitted in Dutch or in English. The Mondriaan Fund offers a contribution for translation for applicants who write in another language. For more information, go to the FAQ for this open call.
How and when to apply?
Applications for a contribution for Caribbean Heritage Employees can be made via the online application system of the Mondriaan Fund. The deadline for submitting an application is 5 September 2024, before 10 AM (timezone Caribbean)/ 4 PM (timezone the Netherlands). You can request an account on the Mondriaan Fund website. You need this to submit an application. This only applies if you do not have an account yet. Applicants must take into account a processing period of 3 months after the deadline of the application round. A contribution cannot be awarded retroactively.
Conditions
- A contribution can be requested by publicly accessible heritage and visual arts institutions, such as museums, archives with a public function and art platforms in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom.
- To be eligible for this contribution, the employee must be employed on a contract. It is not possible to hire the employee on a freelance basis or on a secondment basis.
- The applicant determines the duration of the appointment, but the maximum duration of the subsidy period for an appointment is 4 years.
- The employment on contract must be for at least 24 hours per week.
- Cultural institutions endorse the Fair Practice Code, the Governance Code Culture and the Code Diversity & Inclusion. Application of the Fair Practice Code automatically means that the institution puts the artists’ fees guideline into practice.
Assessment
The submitted application and attachments will be checked for completeness by employees of the Mondriaan Fund. If complete, the application will be submitted to an advisory committee that will advise on awarding a contribution to Caribbean Heritage Employees.
The advisory committee assesses your application on the basis of:
- Description of the institution.
- Job description.
- Motivation of the importance of the position for the applicant institution and/or the heritage or visual arts field in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom.
The advisory committee considers the following criteria
- The importance and reputation of the organisation who is applying.
To what extent is the position and reputation of the applicant institution important for the cultural heritage or visual arts field in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom? - The importance of the position for the applicant institution and/or the heritage or visual arts field in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom.
Does the plan give confidence that the appointment will contribute to stimulating the development of knowledge, development and/or knowledge transfer at the institution who is applying and/or within the heritage or visual arts field in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom?
If applicable:
When institutions on an island jointly apply, or when institutions on different islands apply for a contribution together, this will in principle, count positively towards the assessment. The assessment will consider whether the collaboration on this plan has increased the value for the heritage or visual arts field in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. The advisory committee takes into account the geographical distribution and diversity of the applicants for this grant in its assessment. If the budget is insufficient to honour all applications for which a positive advice has been issued, the advisory committee will rank the other applications based on the above criteria.
Procedure
A Caribbean Heritage Employees contribution will be awarded if the board of the Mondriaan Fund assesses the application positively. In the event of a positive assessment, a reservation is made for the contribution. An advance payment will be made after receiving of and approval of the documents below:
- A signed declaration of consent from the employee in which they give permission to be nominated under this grant.
- A financial statement clearly stating: gross salary, employer’s contributions (think of: social security contributions such as unemployment insurance premium and pension premium), own contribution, percentage that the employee is employed by the employer compared to a full-time employee (part-time percentage), start date and (expected) duration of the subsidy period.

Applying codes
We expect cultural institutions to endorse the Fair Practice Code, as well as the Governance Code for Culture and the Code Diversity & Inclusion. Application of the Fair Practice Code automatically means that the organisation puts the artists’ fees guideline into practice. In the application form you can use a checkmark to confirm that the institution endorses the codes.
Description of the institution (max. 5 pages)
With a brief description of the institution’s recent activities and an explanation of the policy, including proposed activities and objectives, its function in the region, collaborations and public outreach.
Plan (max. 5 page) including:
- Job description.
- Brief motivation of the importance of the position for the applicant institution and/or the heritage or visual arts field in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. If there is a collaboration between institutions, we would like to see the added value of this collaboration for the institutions and the heritage or visual arts field in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom explained.
If applicable:
Bank details
We need the bank account number of the applicant institution in order to transfer the amount if the application is granted. If the organisation has not previously submitted an application to the Mondriaan Fund or if the account number has changed since the previous application, please upload a recent bank statement or other document from the bank showing the account holder’s name and bank account number.
