For whom

Cultural heritage institutions from the Netherlands and the Caribbean part of the Kingdom that want to collaborate with foreign heritage institutions in research projects in joint areas of collection.

The aim of this grant is to stimulate new insights, research and international collaborations in the field of cultural heritage that stand out internationally due to their significance, and will result in a presentation.

For what

The grant is intended for research projects in shared areas of collection focus, such as art historical and provenance research. It is also possible to apply for funding for the development phase of a project, e.g. to cover travel and accommodation costs for researchers and curators, or the costs of presenting the research results in the Netherlands.

How much

The amount of the grant will be determined per application. The Mondriaan Fund can contribute up to 40% of the variable project costs. For development research, applicants may request up to 70% of the variable project costs, to a maximum of €15,000.

Conditions

  • Grant applications are open to museums and heritage institutions that are publicly accessible and manage cultural heritage of national significance in the Netherlands or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom.
  • In order to be eligible, such a Dutch institution must have entered into a partnership with similar cultural heritage institutions abroad.
  • The proposed research project must be shown off by both the Dutch institution and its international partner/s. The presentation costs incurred by the international partner are not eligible for funding.
  • The applicant will make a significant financial contribution to the acquisition of the object itself. The grant application is more likely to be successful if the applicant has raised some funds itself by means of a crowd-funding campaign, e.g. through voordekunst.nl.
  • The foreign partner’s or partners’ share of the project costs must be in acceptable proportion to the grant awarded by the Mondriaan Fund.
General terms and conditions

Assessment

Mondriaan Fund staff check the submitted application and attachments for completeness and compliance with the terms and conditions. If approved, the application is submitted to the advisory committee, which issues a recommendation on awarding the International Collaborative Projects with Heritage Institutes grant.

Final assessment
An International Collaborative Projects with Heritage Institutes grant can only be awarded if the advisory committee issues a positive recommendation regarding the application. In such cases, the advisory committee may also advise on the amount of funding to be awarded and the period over which it will be disbursed. The Mondriaan Fund Board makes the final decision on these matters.

Due to budgetary restrictions, we are unfortunately not always able to award grants to all applications that receive positive advisories from the committee. In this case, the Mondriaan Fund Board asks the advisory committee to prioritise the positive advisories. This means that an application may receive a positive advisory, but a grant is nevertheless not awarded.
