FACT is the UK’s leading organisation for the support and exhibition of art and film that embraces new technology and explores digital culture. FACT believes in enriching lives and shaping the future through film, art and creative technology. We believe that by providing spaces for people, art and technology to meet we can nurture and develop innovative minds, inspire creativity, support emergent talent and transform people’s lives. Nurturing artistic practice is central to our mission. Each year, we support, commission and work with dozens of artists, offering career-enhancing opportunities to develop and show new work and to collaborate and engage with scientists, technologists, radical thinkers and Liverpool communities to explore ideas and create new ways of working. Our Learning programmes offer deep participatory engagements for young people and adults from Liverpool providing pathways into our talent development programme.

About Studio/Lab at FACT

Over recent years, FACT’s programme has strived to become more integrated and coherent across its Exhibitions, Learning and Residencies. Our focus as an organisation has shifted to be artist-centred by foregrounding ways of working that support artists’ practices more holistically: skills and talent development, production, presentation, participation and public engagement. With this in mind, we established Studio/Lab in 2024, a new production and workspace which acts as a hub for a creative community of artists, curators, researchers and participants at FACT. Studio/Lab’s programme is dedicated to experimentation and collaboration within digital art and culture, prioritising new critical perspectives, as well as stories or voices which are underserved by both visual arts and the tech world. About the residency

In partnership with Mondriaan Fonds, we are seeking an artist or curator from the Netherlands to undertake a residency within Studio/Lab at FACT during Autumn/Winter 2026. Here they will get the chance to work alongside other residents (both UK and international), as well as with our local artist members. The residency will focus on research and practice development with some opportunities for public outcomes in the form of open studios, talks, or other artist-led events – such as performances or screenings.

Looking towards our onward programme, we are keen to work with creatives who critically and playfully explore the possibilities of interfaces between the digital and the physical. We’re especially interested in those who aim to create different types of sensorial experiences – both physically, and in the virtual realm – and think how they might experimentally bridge audiences’ encounters with both worlds. Although this residency is based primarily on research, we would be happy to work with the artist to think about further production possibilities outside of the residency, after its culmination.

For whom

Visual artists and curators may apply for a residency at FACT Liverpool. For this residency it is not possible to apply as a duo.

Working period

There is 1 work period of 3 months available:

  • 1 September 2026 tot 29 November 2026.

How much?

The Mondriaan Fund makes a subsidy of € 7.166 available for an artist and of € 5.672 for a curator or art observer to help cover travel expenses, material costs and living costs. This sum is intended for 1 person. In addition, the selected resident is expected to pay a 10% personal contribution. The Mondriaan Fund automatically takes this into account in their ultimate subsidy, you do not need to do anything.

The costs of renting the studio and living space and the support that residents receive from FACT Liverpool are paid directly to FACT Liverpool by the Mondriaan Fund.

The contribution to artists based in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom can be increased to meet any higher travel costs. This is looked at per situation.

Please note! This application must be submitted in English.

Application

The deadline for submitting an application for a work period in 2026 is Thursday 27 March, before 16.00 (Dutch time zone) / 11.00 (Caribbean time zone).

Before submitting an application, please see the Residency page for the terms and conditions, application procedure and assessment procedure.

Please also read the terms and conditions applicable to Mondriaan Fund contributions.

General terms and conditions

Selection

The selection is made by an advisory committee. Based on the submitted documents, the advisory committee proposes candidates to FACT Liverpool. They make the final decision on the participants for the residency. An interview may be part of their selection process.*

When you apply for 2 different residencies within the same call then the quality and development of your oeuvre/(professional) practice and the quality of your cultural entrepreneurship as the artist, curator or viewer is only assessed once. This assessment is therefore valid for both applications.

*Please note! Be aware that the processing time for this selection procedure may exceed three months

Other grants for residencies in the Netherlands and other countries
Because only 1 or 2 residents can be selected for any given residency during each application round, it is inevitable that many will be disappointed. For this reason, we point out that it is also possible to apply for an Artist Project at a different residency location. The specific Artist Project residency applied for may not be one of those already being offered in the Mondriaan Fund application rounds.
