Or it could be for a preparatory research into a possible exhibition, event, debate or project.
How much

You can apply for a Curator Researcher grant together with other curators or artists. In that case, it must concern a collaborative plan that leads to a single result. Each of the collaborating participants must fill out their own application. Each application will be individually assessed.
Apply
Applications can be submitted at any time of the year, using the Mondriaan Fund’s online application system. You must first apply for an account in order to submit your application. Once your application is complete, please allow for a processing period of 3 months from the moment your application has been submitted in full. Grants cannot be awarded retroactively. However, due to the many applications to the fund, the processing time can take longer than expected.
The following is based on the deelregeling Curator Beschouwer (in Dutch).

Assessment
Mondriaan Fund staff check the submitted applications and attachments to ensure that they are complete. Once an application is complete, it is submitted to the committee that advises on awarding Curator Researcher grants. Click below to see what happens to your application.
A Curator Researcher grant is only awarded if the committee advises to that effect, given the quality of the work in combination with the working plan, and if the committee finds this sufficiently meaningful for the development and stimulation of contemporary visual arts or cultural heritage in the Netherlands and/or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom.
Due to our limited budget, it is not possible to award grants to all those whose applications receive positive advisories from the committee. The board of the Mondriaan Fund consequently requests the committee to consider the approved applications against one another and rank them in order of priority. This can mean that an application can be positively assessed, but the applicant is nonetheless not awarded a grant.
The committee judges your application on the basis of:
- Your explanation of your work and professional practice.
- Your curriculum vitae.
- Your working plan.
- Documentation.
The advisory committee considers the following criteria:
-
The quality and significance of previous activities:*
- Do you have a distinctive vision regarding contemporary visual art and/or cultural heritage?
- Has this vision been convincingly conveyed in previous activities?
- Do your previous activities exhibit quality? Consider e.g. professionalism and skill, the ownership or autonomy of the curatorial activities, the selection of artists/artworks, the reflection on the selected themes.
- Do your activities as curator/observer help further understanding, improve awareness and/or extend public reach? Consider e.g. knowledge intensification, explanation, the development or visibility of the visual arts and/or cultural heritage. This may be in relation to one or more artists, disciplines or movements, collections or elements of cultural heritage.
-
The quality of your cultural entrepreneurship:*
- Is it apparent from your CV that your practice has been acknowledged? As indicated by the nature, location and significance of e.g. exhibitions, publications, commissions, grants or awards.
- Are you actively focused on developing your practice, entering into collaborations, entering into the public eye and finding an audience for your activities?
-
The quality of the plan:
- Does the project exhibit quality? Consider e.g. the significance of the concept, the project’s strength of imagination and power of expression, and whether the plan is feasible.
- Is the proposed project remarkable within the context?
- If applicable: does the plan include a convincing strategy to reach a relevant audience?
* The background and context of the professional practice will be taken into consideration during the assessment, e.g. the nature and duration of the professional practice and your cultural context.
