Het Lage Noorden residency in Friesland is a remarkable place to create, research, experiment and construct. The tranquil Dutch Wadden region provides a peaceful location for exploration. Het Lage Noorden is located in the Frisian countryside, not far from the Wadden Sea. The extensive grounds are home to first-rate studios (also suitable for large works), a library and a presentation space. By offering space, materials, tools and advice, Het Lage Landen supports artists as they produce large artworks and installations.

Het Lage Noorden unites art and accommodation: on the campsite, in the guest house and in the writer’s houses. The site brings together artists, local residents, cyclists, hikers, campers and other guests.

In an attempt to introduce visitors to artists’ creative processes, Het Lage Noorden invites artists to present their work in a shared exhibition space during the work period.

All artists in the Artist in Residence programme are required to submit a project proposal, which is used to gauge additional activities and materials. An evaluation concludes the period.

Residents stay in a single room in the guest house and have access to an appropriate work space/studio. Special rates can be agreed for guests of residents.

For whom?

This residency is open to all forms of visual art, with the preference given to artists who plan to use the work period to create a large work and/or create work/conduct research in which every aspect of the singular surroundings represent added value.

Work period

There are 2 spots available for 1 working period of 3 months:

  • 15 Febuary – 15 May 2024

Applicants are asked to state their preference for a work period on the application form, and every effort will be made to honour this preference.

The contribution

The Mondriaan Fund makes a monthly contribution of € 2,000 available to help cover travel expenses, material costs and accommodation costs. This sum is intended for 1 person. In addition, the selected resident is expected to pay a 10% personal contribution (the Mondriaan Fund automatically takes this into account in their ultimate contribution, you do not need to do anything).

Expenses associated with renting the studio/living space, supervision and presentation are not included in the contribution and will be covered by the Mondriaan Fund.

In the case that a duo or collaboration is selected for the residency, the associated contribution will be raised to cover additional travel expenses, as well as a proportionate sum to contribute to the other applicant’s accommodation costs.

The deadline for submitting an application for a work period in 2023 is 21 September, before 16:00 PM (CEST) / 10:00 (AST).

Terms and conditions

Selection

An advisory committee assists in the selection process, recommending candidates to Het Lage Noorden based on the submitted documents. The selected applicants will be invited to an interview with Het Lage Noorden. The final selection will be made following the interviews. Should a suitable candidate not be found amongst the applicants, the advisory committee can recommend their own candidates.

Other grants for residencies in the Netherlands and other countries

As only 1 or 2 residents can be selected for any given residency during each selection round, many applicants will be disappointed. For this reason, we point out that you can also apply for an Artist Project with a residency at a different location. That Artist Project residency location may not be one of those already offered in the Mondriaan Fund Residency application round.
