Since 2017, the Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie, the Film Fund, the Performing Arts Fund, the Dutch Foundation for Literature, and the Mondriaan Fund have together been offering residencies via open calls at the Van Doesburghuis in Meudon-Val-Fleury/Paris. This residency provides artists and curators/art critics the opportunity to further develop their artistic practice. In this round, the Mondriaan Fund is offering a residency at the Van Doesburg House in Meudon, Paris, for autumn/winter 2026. Visual artists and curators/art critics may submit a proposal.

In the studio house that Theo van Doesburg designed for himself and his wife Nelly in the late 1920s, visual artists and curators have the opportunity to conduct research, explore ideas or create new work. The residency is intended to stimulate the artistic development of visual artists and curators/art critics, and to allow them to further develop their practice in an inspirational location. Residents can also make new international contacts and probe new opportunities.

This open call from the Mondriaan Fund is for a work period of 4 months, for visual artists and curators/art critics. As a nod to Theo and Nelly’s interdisciplinary practice and multifaceted artistry, a collaboration with an applicant working in an alternative discipline is also possible.

About Van Doesburghuis

Late in the 1920s, Theo van Doesburg was finally able to give shape to his all-embracing philosophy of life and art when he designed an architectonic wonder on a modest plot in the rural municipality of Meudon, where many writers (Céline, the Goncourt Brothers, Sartre), architects (Jean Prouvé) and artists (Rodin, Hans Arp and Sophie Taeuber-Arp) sought refuge. The studio house was completed in the late 1930s, but Theo died shortly after at the age of 47. The house, which was given the name of its creator in the 1980s, will enter history as the physical embodiment of Van Doesburg’s ideas on the synthesis of the arts. Following an extraordinary gift by Wies van Moorsel, Nelly’s niece and only heiress, ownership of the studio house passed to the Dutch State in the early 1980s. The Van Doesburghuis Foundation became responsible for managing the house, and making it available as a place for artists to live and work. In the past 40 years, some 50 artists and intermediaries have stayed at the Van Doesburghuis.

The Van Doesburghuis is a listed building, and residents are therefore asked to help preserve the studio house and to treat it with the utmost care and respect. Applicants should also be aware of the public function of the Van Doesburghuis: the house is open to the public between 14:00 and 18:00 on every first Saturday of the month, in the presence of the resident(s). Residents are also expected to be willing (in principle, following consultation with the Foundation) to receive guests outside of the standard opening hours.

For whom

The residency is intended for visual artists and curators/art critics. In the case of applications by duos or collaborations, each participant must submit a separate application.

A duo is defined as: 2 artists who structurally create work together. Collaborations can (on occasion) be considered as duos if they submit a joint plan for the working period that leads to one result. In addition, a duo must live and work together in one space during the residency. Please note, you both need to submit separate applications.

Work period

There is 1 work period available:

  • 27 September 2026 – 17 January 2027

How much?

The Mondriaan Fund provides a contribution of €8,000 for one artist or curator or art critic/observer to cover travel, material, and living expenses. This amount is intended for one person. In addition, a personal contribution of 10% is expected from the resident. This will be automatically deducted from the Mondriaan Fund’s contribution; you do not need to take any action.

The contribution for residents based in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands may be increased to compensate for potentially higher travel costs. This will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Application

The deadline for submitting an application for a work period in 2026 is Thursday 26 February 2026 before 16.00 (Dutch time zone) / 11.00 (Caribbean time zone).

Before submitting an application, please see the Residency page for the terms and conditions, application procedure and assessment procedure.

Please also read the terms and conditions applicable to Mondriaan Fund contributions.

General terms and conditions

Selection

The selection is made by an advisory committee. Based on the submitted documents, the advisory committee selects 3 residents. A representative of Villa Kamogawa participates in the meeting.*

When you apply for two different residencies within the same call then the quality and development of your oeuvre/(professional) practice and the quality of your cultural entrepreneurship as the artist, curator or viewer is only assessed once. This assessment is therefore valid for both applications.

*Please note! Be aware that the processing time for this selection procedure may exceed three months

Andere bijdragen voor residencies in binnen- en buitenland

Because only 1 or 2 residents can be selected for any given residency during each application round, it is inevitable that many will be disappointed. For this reason, we point out that it is also possible to apply for an Artist Project at a different residency location. The specific Artist Project residency applied for may not be one of those already being offered in the Mondriaan Fund application rounds.
