Visual artists, independent curators, art critics and art observers based in the Netherlands and the Caribbean part of the Kingdom.

For what?

The shortened application procedure for the Voucher International contribution means that applicants can quickly respond to an invitation from an internationally renowned contemporary visual art institution, platform, festival or symposium held abroad, to give e.g. a lecture, performance or workshop, or to participate on a panel.

How much?

The contribution is solely intended to cover travel and accommodation costs, up to a maximum sum of € 2,500.

How and when to apply

Applications may be submitted at any time of the year, provided sufficient budget remains. You will require an account in order to submit an application. New accounts can be requested on the website. Applications will be accepted a maximum of 4 months and a minimum of 5 weeks before the presentation. We aim to process all applications within 5 weeks, although the procedure can sometimes take longer. In no cases will a contribution be granted in retroaction.

Terms and conditions

  • The artist, curator, art critic or art observer must have received an invitation from an internationally renowned contemporary visual art institution, platform, festival or symposium held abroad.
  • If you are applying as a curator, art critic, or art observer, the activity for which you are applying must be part of your independent practice.
  • It must be clear from the invitation that the institution, platform, festival or symposium is offering the artist, curator, art critic or art observer a fair remuneration for the lecture, workshop, performance or panel participation.
  • The contribution cannot be used for research trips linked to (the preparation of) an exhibition or presentation, nor can the contribution be used for activities associated with a commercial gallery or an art institution, platform, festival or symposium that is primarily focused on sales.
  • The contribution cannot be used for expenses for which an alternative Mondriaan Fund scheme is available.
For artists:
  • You have been working as a professional artist for at least 1 year and are registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce; or you have completed at least 3 years of a Higher Professional Education (HBO) art course and have worked as a professional artist for at least 1 year. Or you have worked for 3 years or longer as a professional artist.
  • You may not apply for the Voucher International contribution while studying at an educational institution (e.g. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programmes). The same applies for postgraduate and postdoctoral programmes.
  • You are artistically active in the visual arts and in that capacity embedded in the professional visual arts practice in the Netherlands and/or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom.
For curators, critics and art observers:
  • You have been working as a professional curator, art critic or art observer in the field of visual art for at least 2 years, and can support this with publications, exhibitions, research and/or projects.
  • You may not apply for the Voucher International contribution while studying at an educational institution (e.g. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programmes). The same applies for postgraduate and postdoctoral programmes.
  • You are artistically active in the visual arts and in that capacity embedded in the professional visual arts practice in the Netherlands and/or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom.

Assessment

The submitted application and appendices will be checked for completeness. A simplified assessment procedure is used for applications for the Voucher International contribution. Applications will be assessed based upon:

  • The relevance of the lecture, performance, workshop or panel participation for the field.
  • The quality of the internationally renowned contemporary visual art institution, platform, festival or symposium.
  • The quality of the applicant’s artistic work.
  • Motivation: does the applicant’s lecture, workshop, performance, etc. help raise the visibility and international appreciation of relevant contemporary visual arts from the Netherlands and/or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom (does the activity transcend the personal interest of the applicant).

We also acknowledge the vital importance of distribution, and can therefore not accept all applications for the same event. The Voucher International contribution is granted following approval from the Mondriaan Fund Board. Whether the contribution is awarded or not has no further consequences for other applications to the Mondriaan Fund.

Checklist for artists

Explanation of work (max. 3 pages)

Outline what your work is about and what you have done to develop your professional practice, your substantive and artistic principles and how you express these in your work and professional practice. In the case of collaborations, outline your role.

(Visual) documentation (max. 10 pages)

The documentation should focus on your most important works from the last 1 to 4 years. Use a maximum of 10 images.

Please note: do not use hyperlinks in the PDF with (visual) documentation material. We cannot accept hyperlinks (to web pages for example) because the supplied image material may not be adjusted during the processing of the application.

Commitment from the inviting organisation

Invitation from the international contemporary visual art institution, platform, festival or symposium also stating the remuneration offered to the applicant.

CV (max. 2 pages)

Upload the most important information about your professional practice, with an emphasis on the last 1 to 4 years. Consider, for example, exhibitions (indicate whether it was a solo or group exhibition), events, commissions, awards, subsidies and publications. Also mention any ancillary activities, such as teaching and consulting positions.

Plan (max. 2 pages)

What is your personal motivation for giving a lecture, performance or workshop, or for participating on a panel? Outline why the event contributes to your artistic development. Also outline the envisaged results.

Information about the inviting organisation (max. 4 pages)

Outline the curriculum and offer additional information about the international contemporary visual art institution, platform, festival or symposium that has invited you to attend. If the organisation has a public programme, also outline their programme of activities and include an explanation of their public reach and visibility in the past 3 years. Also outline what motivates the organisation and indicate why you have been invited to give a lecture, performance or workshop, or participate on a panel.

Budget

Use the application form to submit a concise budget (detailing travel and accommodation costs). The contribution can only be used for accommodation costs including daily allowance (max. € 150 per day) and travel costs (economy class). Travel costs cover the price of a return trip from the Netherlands or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom to the event in the other country and, if applicable, the cost of a visa. If you are based in another country than the Netherlands, travel costs will be covered from that address to the event, and back. Accommodation costs are covered from a day before the lecture, performance, workshop or panel appearance to a day after.

Quotation

A quotation is required for all entries above € 1,000, which can be uploaded via the application form. If applicable, please include multiple quotes in 1 PDF.

Extract from the Personal Records Database (BRP)

If you are not Dutch, please enclose a recent extract (no older than 1 year) from the Personal Records Database (BRP) with your application.

Diploma/deregistration or Chamber of Commerce extract

If you have been professionally active for less than 3 years, we require a copy of the diplomas from any completed art courses with visual art curricula, or in the case that did not complete the course, confirmation of deregistration from the academy. If you have not attended art school, you can submit a recent Chamber of Commerce extract (no longer than 3 months old).

Bank details

We need your bank account number to transfer funds if your application is granted. If you have not previously submitted an application to the Mondriaan Fund or if the account number has changed since the previous application, please upload a recent bank statement clearly stating the name of the account holder and IBAN/bank account number of the applicant. Applicants established in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom can provide a bank statement or other document from the bank stating the name of the account holder and bank account number.

If you have a business bank account for your one-person business, include a recent (less than 3 months old) copy of your registration with the Kamer van Koophandel (KvK, Chamber of Commerce), showing that you are the sole proprietor of the account.

Checklist for curators, art critics and art observers

Explanation of work (max. 3 pages)

Outline your substantive and artistic principles and how you express these in your work and professional practice. Provide a short explanation of several relevant projects and your role in these projects. In the case of collaborations, outline your role.

(Visual) documentation (max. 6 pages)

The documentation should focus on your most important works from the last 2 to 4 years. Use images and/or a selection of your most relevant and current essays or articles.
