For whom?

Organisations based in the Netherlands or Caribbean part of the Kingdom that do not aim to generate profit or sales.

With the Art Heritage Festival grant, the Mondriaan Fund supports the presentation of visual art and/or heritage at festivals and similar events held in physical spaces that take place no more than once a year. The grant is intended for activities that help reach a more diverse or broader audience for visual art and/or heritage, or for activities that meaningfully connect to the public in an engaging way. It is important that the event has a supra-regional, national or international scope.

For what?

Applications are open for festivals, biennales, triennales and similar events held in the Netherlands or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom that are (partly) dedicated to the presentation of visual art and/or heritage. It is also possible to apply for organising public activities aimed at increasing the visibility of visual art and/or heritage.

How much?

The amount of the contribution is determined per application. The Mondriaan Fund can contribute up to 40% of the eligible project costs directly associated with the visual art and/or heritage activities for which the application is submitted. The minimum project budget must exceed € 25,000 and may only include costs directly related to the project. Grants of € 100,000 or more are highly exceptional. If you would like to apply for funding of this scale, please contact the Mondriaan Fund.

When and how to apply?

Applications can be submitted at any time of the year, using our online application system. You will require an account before you can submit an application. If you do not already have an account, please apply for one on this website. Keep in mind that a 3-month period is required for processing the applications. No grants are awarded retrospectively.

The following is based on the deelregeling Art Heritage Festival (in Dutch), as published in the Staatscourant.

Terms and conditions

  • The organisation is a legal entity or collective of legal entities, not aimed at generating profits or sales. Applications cannot be submitted for support for visual art and/or heritage activities that are intended to generate profit or sales.
  • The organisation must be established in the Netherlands or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom, and this must also be the location of the activities.
  • Institutions for art education and post academic institutions are excluded from applying.
  • Applications can only be submitted for publicly accessible events that are held no more than once a year.
  • A grant may not be requested for journals, publications, documentaries, symposia or conferences, or online festivals and events.
  • Support will not be provided for activities that are already being, or will be, funded through another Mondriaan Fund grant, a multi-year grant from a national cultural fund, through the Regulation under the Specific Cultural Policy Act, or the Regulation on the Management of the National Collection and Funding of Museum Institutions.
  • If a visual artist is involved in the plans, they must be able to demonstrate at least 1 year of professional practice as a visual artist.

If you have applied for the Art Heritage Festival grant, you cannot simultaneously apply for the Artist’s Fee grant for the same project. Only if your application for the Art Heritage Festival grant is rejected may you apply for the Artist’s Fee grant, provided the institution meets the eligibility criteria. Please also take into account the processing times of both grants and the start date of your project. In the budget, use one of these two calculators for your fair fee calculations.
  • The project budget must also meet all requirements regarding fair pay. This means that everyone included in the budget must be paid in accordance with the applicable collective labour agreements or guidelines. This must be clearly detailed in both the application form and budget.
General terms and conditions

Assessment

Mondriaan Fund staff check the submitted applications and attachments to ensure that they are complete. Once an application is complete, it is submitted to the advisory committee that advises on awarding the Art Heritage Festival grant.

A grant can only be awarded if the advisory committee advises to that effect. When making a positive recommendation, the advisory committee can also recommend the amount of financial support to be awarded and the period during which this will be disbursed. The Board of the Mondriaan Fund makes the final decision in this regard.

Due to budgetary limitations, we are unfortunately not always able to fully fund all applications that receive a positive assessment. This means that an application may be positively assessed, but that the grant awarded could be lower than the requested sum.

What happens to my application?
The advisory committee assesses your application on the basis of:
  • Description of the organisation’s mission, vision and profile.
  • Project plan with an overview of the planned activities, with an emphasis on the visual art and/or heritage activities. Including a description of any collaborations.
  • Presentation plan that describes the target groups, explains how the intended audience will be reached, and outlines the contribution to the regional, national or international cultural infrastructure.
  • Budget and financial plan.
  • If applicable: information about the involved artists.
The advisory committee considers the following criteria:

Quality of the organisation

  • Does the organisation have a clear vision on relevant issues within contemporary visual art, cultural heritage and/or other areas?
  • What is the (artistic and) substantive quality of its recent activities, taking into account the initiative’s role, position and working methods.

Project plan*

  • To what extent is the (artistic and) substantive quality of the visual art and/or heritage activities compelling?
  • Are the visual art and/or heritage activities aligned with relevant developments in the field?

Public reach*

  • Does the plan convincingly describe the target groups and outline an appropriate communication strategy and tools?
  • Does the plan inspire confidence that the activities will help reach a more diverse or broader audience for visual art and/or heritage, or that they will establish a meaningful connection with the public in an engaging way?

Cultural infrastructure

  • Does the plan inspire confidence that the activities will make a meaningful contribution to the art and culture landscape at a supra-regional, national or international level?

In all cases, the committee will assess whether the activities help strengthen the quality of the visual art and/or heritage landscape in the Netherlands or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom, taking into account the specific context of the applying organisation.

*These criteria carry more weight, as they are specific focus areas within this grant.
Additionally, the criterion ‘project plan’ is a prerequisite: applications will only be eligible for funding if this criterion is assessed positively.

Checklist

To process your application, the Mondriaan Fund needs information. All of this information can be submitted in the application form itself, together with documentation that you can upload. Here below is a checklist that follows the layout of the application form and contains all the information required.

Tip: collect all your information before you start filling out the online application form. Your attachments should be uploaded as PDFs. Please note: make sure that your documents meet the stated conditions. Otherwise, we will unfortunately not be able to process your request. Do not exceed the number of pages where a maximum is indicated.

Cultural institutions subscribe to the Fair Practice Code, the Culture Governance Code and the Diversity & Inclusion Code. Please provide a brief description of your institution’s perspective on these codes and how they are embedded within your organisation. If visual artists or other collaborative partners are mentioned in the plan, please clearly indicate whether they have already been confirmed.

Outline how the visual art and/or heritage activities will be presented. State the expected number of participants or visitors, describe the target groups, explain why they were chosen, and how the activities are tailored to them. Also explain how the activities contribute to reaching a more diverse or broader audience for visual art and/or heritage, or the extent to which they meaningfully connect with the audience in an engaging way.

Itemised budget with financial plan (state: excluding VAT)

See the explanation of the budget for institutions. With regard to the justification of crucial budget items, the Mondriaan Fund may request supporting documents (such as quotations) if there are any uncertainties about a particular item.
If applicable, include a realistic fee for the artist. Please note: Use one of these two calculators for your fair fee calculations.

(Visual) documentation (max. 20 pages in total)

If contemporary visual artists are involved in the application, you must also upload visual documentation for this application. Please note! This is mandatory.
Compile a PDF presenting the most important works from the last 4 years:

  • Begin with the most recent work. Ideally highlight a comparable number of works per year, so that the committee can see how your work has developed.
  • Include 1 image per page. If you need to show a (spatial) work from different angles, you can include multiple images of that specific work on 1 page. This is permitted on a maximum of 5 of the 20 pages.
  • You can also upload audio or video/film fragments totalling up to 15 minutes (the committee will require these if you make films, performances, video installations or audio works).
  • Applicants using publications to present or make their work can upload a PDF of a maximum of 1 publication or a short video in which the publication is featured. The publication is for the committee’s perusal and may not be viewed in full. Publications sent to us by post will not be presented to the committee.

Note: You can upload a maximum of 500 MB of images and audio or video/film. See the explanation of the technical specifications.

Documentation list (max. 2 pages in total)

Please include a documentation list (in PDF) that corresponds to the visual documentation material, containing a description or caption for each image and/or audio/video fragment information about the title, year, dimensions, technique, duration, and any additional information. For example: 01, title of work, 2024, 20×30 cm, material. See the specifications for the documentation list for more examples.

Please note: do not use hyperlinks in the PDF with (visual) documentation material and in the documentation list. We cannot accept hyperlinks (to web pages for example) because the supplied image material may not be adjusted during the processing of the application.

In the case of substantive and equal collaboration with one or more other organisations active in the field of visual art or heritage:
