Do you meet the conditions and did you go through the checklist?

Interdisciplinary comprises 2 grants;  the Interdisciplinary grant for individuals and the Interdisciplinary grant for organisations. Interdisciplinary was developed through a collaboration between the Mondriaan Fund, the Netherlands Film Fund, Performing Arts Fund NL, the Dutch Foundation for Literature, Fund for Cultural Participation and the Creative Industries Fund NL.

Through this grant, the national cultural funds aim to support interdisciplinary projects in which multiple cultural disciplines are integrated, rather than merely presented side by side. This may involve, for example, a presentation at the intersection of the performing arts and visual art, a book combining literature and film, or a participatory work in which music and fashion meet. This grant also supports the practices of individual interdisciplinary makers. For example, those who combine fashion with digital fiction, film with literature, or theatre with visual art in their practice.

The Mondriaan Fund acts as the lead fund for the grants.

When and how to apply?

Applications for Interdisciplinary can be submitted twice a year via the Mondriaan Fund online application system. Deadline for the submission in 2026 is on 1 October, before 16:00 (Dutch time zone) / 11:00 (Caribbean time zone).

You need an account before you can submit an application. If you do not already have an account, please apply for one on this website. Please note that creating an account may take several working days, and that a processing period of up to 3 months applies following the application deadline. Projects must not have started prior to the submission of the application. No grants are awarded retroactively.

This explanation is based on the deelregeling Organisation (in Dutch) and deelregeling Individual (in Dutch), as published in the Staatscourant.

Interdisciplinary comprises 2 grants. Below you will find an explanation of Interdisciplinary Organisation.

Interdisciplinairy Organisation

Are you an organisation seeking funding for a project at the intersection of different cultural forms? Are you organising a project that brings together different disciplines; for example by combining the performing arts with literature, or visual art with design? If so, you may be eligible for the Interdisciplinary projects for organisations grant.

NB If you are applying on behalf of an organisation developing an interdisciplinary project, please see Interdisciplinary Individual

For whom?

Non-profit cultural organisations with legal personality, based in the Netherlands or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom.

For what?

Applications can be submitted for an interdisciplinary project that engages an audience, is presented to an audience, or is open to the public. This may take the form of a presentation or an event.

An interdisciplinary project is understood as one in which various cultural disciplines are integrated, not merely presented side by side. It should involve the integration, interaction or fusion of or between at least two  artistic disciplines within a single work, such as an artwork, performance, publication or film. The aim is to support projects that are not or not fully eligible for support under another scheme offered by any of the national cultural funds.

Applications may be submitted for interdisciplinary projects across all cultural disciplines, including: visual art, photography, design, digital culture, architecture, fashion, the performing arts, literature, film and documentary.

How much?

The contribution depends on the total project budget:

  • A fixed contribution of € 12,500 for a project with a budget of € 15,000 to € 60,000.
  • A fixed contribution of € 50,000 for a project with a budget of € 60,000 to € 500,000.

For more information, please refer to the explanation of the budget for Interdisciplinary Organisation.

Conditions

  • The cultural organisation must be a legal entity, or a collective of legal entities, operating on a non-profit basis.
  • Media companies, as defined in the Film Fund’s General Regulations, are not eligible to apply. This also applies to applicants in which a media company has, directly or indirectly, such control or de facto influence that it is able to determine, to a significant extent, the applicant’s policy, or to exercise substantial influence over the content of that policy or of the film production.
  • The organisation must be based in the Netherlands or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom, and the activities for which the application is submitted must also take place there.
  • Institutions for art education and post academic institutions are excluded from applying.
  • All cultural institutions subscribe to the Fair Practice Code (Dutch only), the Culture Governance Code (Dutch only) and the Diversity & Inclusion Code (Dutch only). Compliance with the Fair Practice Code automatically means that the institution implements the codes
  • The applicant is expected to comply with fair pay requirements. This means that all those who carry out work for the project and are included in the budget must be remunerated in accordance with applicable collective labour agreements or guidelines as described in the Fair Practice Code.
  • The makers involved must be active within a professional context. This may include both makers with formal arts training and those who are self-taught.
  • The application must concern an interdisciplinary project.
  • In addition to professional makers, amateurs may be involved in the project, provided that there is professional artistic lead responsibility and a professional context.
  • No contribution will be awarded to projects that have already received support from any of the 6 national cultural funds.
  • If a contribution is awarded, no additional funding for the same project may be requested from any of the 6 national cultural funds.
  • An application is only eligible if the project falls within the scope of multiple national cultural funds. Projects that fall entirely within another funding scheme offered by one of the natural cultural funds are not eligible under this scheme.
terms and conditions

Assessment

Mondriaan Fund staff check submitted applications and supporting documents to ensure that they are complete and comply with the conditions. The advisory committee assesses whether a project qualifies as interdisciplinary. The Interdisciplinary advisory committee is composed of advisors from various national cultural funds. If all conditions are met, the advisory committee assesses the application against the criteria and advises on the awarding of a contribution under Interdisciplinary Organisation.

A contribution can only be awarded if the advisory committee issues a positive recommendation. Due to limited resources, it is not always possible to fund all applications that receive a positive recommendation. If the available budget is insufficient to fund all positively assessed applications, these applications will be ranked according to the assessment criteria. This means that an application may receive a positive assessment but nevertheless not be awarded a contribution.

NB Please note that applications and decisions may be shared with the other national cultural funds for the purpose of checking for double funding and evaluating the effectiveness of the scheme.

what happens with my application
The advisory committee assesses your application based on:
  • Experience: an explanation of previously realised projects.
  • Plan: a project plan including a substantive rationale and an explanation of its interdisciplinary nature.
  • Reach: a presentation plan including a description of the target group(s).
  • Budget: a balanced budget.
The advisory committee considers the following criteria:

Quality and relevance of the applicant’s previous activities

  • What is the artistic and substantive quality of recent activities? Consider the organisation’s role, position and approach.
  • Do the previous activities demonstrate that the applicant is capable of organising a relevant interdisciplinary project? Consider, for example, the artistic and substantive vision, organisational capacity and expertise.

Quality of the project plan *

  • Does the plan demonstrate a distinctive vision, and is this vision convincingly reflected in the proposed project?
  • Is the chosen form appropriate to the subject?
  • Is the plan feasible in terms of implementation?

Quality of the presentation plan

  • Is the project presented in a sufficiently visible manner and in a way that is appropriate to the subject?
  • Is the presentation plan (including the description of the target groups) realistic and well considered?

Innovation

  • Does the plan have innovative value and/or a distinctive form in its combination of different disciplines, compared to other applications within this scheme? For example, the extent to which it contributes to relevant new substantive insights, or the way in which it questions or develops the boundaries of disciplines. If so, this is taken into account positively.

* This criterion is weighted by a factor of 2, as it is a key focus of this scheme. Applications are only eligible for support if this criterion is assessed positively.

Interdisciplinary comprises 2 grants. Below you will find an explanation of Interdisciplinary Individual.

Interdisciplinary Individual

Are you a maker whose practice is not confined to a single discipline? Do you, for example, combine the performing arts with literature, visual art with design, or film with fashion? And would you like to further develop your interdisciplinary practice? If so, you may be eligible for the Interdisciplinary Individual scheme.

NB If you are applying on behalf of an organisation developing an interdisciplinary project, please see Interdisciplinary Organisation.

For whom?

Individual makers with a demonstrable professional interdisciplinary practice, in which multiple disciplines are combined that fall within the scope of different national cultural funds, and with at least 1 year of demonstrable professional experience.

The contribution can be used to develop your interdisciplinary practice over the course of a year. This may include producing work, conducting research, experimentation, and/or the purchase of materials and equipment, as well as working on commissions or participating in events, exhibitions or other presentations in the Netherlands or abroad.

Interdisciplinary practices are understood as professional practices in which at least two cultural disciplines are combined or integrated. Within this scheme, interdisciplinary practices are also understood to mean: multidisciplinary, hybrid, mixed, transdisciplinary, pluridisciplinary and cross-disciplinary practices, insofar as they meet the definition mentioned above. Cultural disciplines include, but are not limited to, visual art, cultural heritage, photography, design, digital culture, architecture, fashion, the performing arts, literature, film and documentary.

How much?

€ 24,900 for 12 months.

Conditions

  • In order to be eligible for a contribution, you must be artistically active in multiple cultural disciplines and, in that capacity, be embedded in the professional field in the Netherlands and/or Caribbean part of the Kingdom.
  • Applications may only be submitted by makers who have been working as professional interdisciplinary makers for at least 1 year.
  • If you have completed a Bachelor’s degree programme (HBO) focused on a cultural discipline, such as programme at an art academy, film academy, dance academy or theatre school, the date on your diploma will be considered the start of your professional practice.
  • If there is an interim period between your graduation from the Bachelor’s programme and the start of your Master’s programme, this period will be counted as part of your professional practice.
  • If you have not completed a Bachelor’s degree programme (HBO) focused on a cultural discipline, the date on which you first presented work within a relevant cultural context will be considered the start of your professional practice.
  • A period during which the applicant is enrolled in a Master’s programme does not count towards the duration of the professional practice.
  • Periods of participation in postdoctoral programmes or programmes at postgraduate institutions such as the Rijksakademie, De Ateliers, the Jan van Eyck Academie, EKWC or Das Arts, are considered part of the professional practice.
  • It is not permitted to apply for or use a contribution while enrolled to study at educational institutions for e.g. Bachelor’s, Master’s or postdoctoral programmes. This also applies to participation in programmes at postgraduate institutions and to PhD programmes. The exception is part-time programmes (not Bachelor’s programmes) of less than 20 hours a week.
  • If an Interdisciplinary Individual contribution is awarded, you may not apply for a comparable grant for the same period from any of the 6 national cultural funds, such as the Artist Startcontribution from the Mondriaan Fund or the Talent Development scheme from the Creative Industries Fund NL.
  • An application is only eligible if your practice falls within the scope of multiple national cultural funds.
Previous applications
  • An Interdisciplinary Individual contribution can only be awarded once.
  • A maker whose application under the Interdisciplinary Individual scheme has been rejected is not permitted to submit a new application under this scheme for 12 months.
  • It is not permitted to apply for an Interdisciplinary Individual contribution while receiving other financial support from a national cultural fund if the Mondriaan Fund considers that the same costs would be covered.
Total taxable income
  • The applicant’s total taxable income for the period for which the application is submitted must not exceed € 55,000.
  • The level of the total taxable income is assessed in advance using the income tax return for the previous calendar year. For applications submitted between 1 January and 1 October, the total taxable income from the year prior may be provided. If the applicant did not file an income tax return in the relevant years, you will be asked to provide a statement of your income, an explanation of why no tax return was filed, and/or proof from the tax authorities that no tax return was required. A copy of the income-related contribution under the Health Insurance Act (‘inkomensafhankelijke bijdrage Zorgverzekeringswet’) or VAT return (‘aangifte Omzetbelasting’) is not valid, as these documents do not state the total taxable income.

Assessment

Mondriaan Fund staff check submitted applications and supporting documents to ensure that they are complete and comply with the conditions. The advisory committee assesses whether a project qualifies as interdisciplinary. The Interdisciplinary advisory committee is composed of advisors from various national cultural funds. If all conditions are met, the advisory committee assesses the application against the criteria and advises on the awarding of a contribution under Interdisciplinary Individual.

A contribution can only be awarded if the committee issues a positive recommendation.

What happens to my application?
The advisory committee assesses your application based on
  • (Visual) documentation.
  • An explanation of your work and cultural entrepreneurship.
  • CV.
  • Plan.
The advisory committee considers the following criteria

The quality and development of the oeuvre *

  • Is there evidence of a distinctive artistic vision, and is this convincingly reflected in previously realised work?
  • Does the quality of your work to date demonstrate potential or notable talent that is, or may become, significant within the cultural field? Consider, for example, the development of your oeuvre, the substantive significance of your work, its imaginative strength, your command of the selected media and/or techniques, and the expressive power of your work.

The quality of your cultural entrepreneurship

  • Do you make convincing efforts to ensure that the intentions of your work are understood and appreciated? And does this lead to increased visibility of your practice within a relevant cultural context?

* This criterion is weighted by a factor of 3, as it is a key focus of this scheme.

If the advisory committee assesses the above criteria positively in conjunction, it will also consider:

The quality of the plan and your approach to reaching an audience

  • Does the plan contribute to your artistic development and the development of your cultural entrepreneurship?
  • Does the plan sufficiently demonstrate that the work and/or working process will be presented to relevant professionals and/or relevant audiences?
  • Does the plan have a distinctive form in its combination of different disciplines, compared to other applications within this scheme? If so, this is taken into account positively.

During the assessment, the background and context of the professional practice will be taken into consideration, such as the educational programmes you have completed, the nature and duration of your practice, or your cultural context.
