The Awareness of the History of Slavery grant comprises 2 trajectories. Below you will find an explanation of Awareness of the History of Slavery for institutions.

Awareness of the History of Slavery – Institution

Are you a heritage or visual arts institution seeking to contribute to raising awareness of the history of slavery, and would you like to offer a residency or workplace to a visual artist, curator or heritage professional towards this aim? If so, you may be eligible for the grant for Awareness of the History of Slavery for institutions.

Who is eligible?

Cultural institutions in the Netherlands and the Caribbean part of the Kingdom that focus on presenting cultural heritage and/or visual art. Cultural institutions are understood to include museums, art centres and venues, archives engaged in public presentation, and other art and heritage initiatives that focus on presenting cultural heritage and/or visual art.

Through this temporary grant, the Mondriaan Fund aims to offer institutions the opportunity to develop and carry out a plan that contributes to raising awareness of the history of slavery.

For what?

The appointment of, an assignment for, a visual artist, curator or heritage professional who will conduct research (such as artistic research, collection research or preliminary research for an exhibition), develop and present an artistic project, or develop programmes that contribute to raising awareness of the history of slavery.

A range of communities form an inextricable part of the history of slavery. Proposed plans should therefore offer space for the perspectives of communities of originally non-European descent that are directly connected to this history, including descendants of enslaved people; Indigenous peoples of Suriname and of Sint Maarten, Saba, Sint Eustatius, Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao; Chinese, Javanese and Hindustani indentured labourers; as well as, for instance, Moluccan, Ghanaian and South African communities. One or more of these communities must play a meaningful role in the proposed plan.

How much?

The Mondriaan Fund contributes € 50,000 per position (90%). Institutions are required to contribute at least 10%, i.e. € 5,555. The grant is intended to cover the gross salary of the visual artist, curator or heritage professional and the associated employer’s costs, or the cost the assignment for the visual artist, curator or heritage professional.

At least € 40,000 of the Mondriaan Fund contribution must be spent on the gross salary or fee of the visual artist, curator or heritage professional and the associated employer’s costs. The remaining part of the contribution may be used to cover travel, accommodation and presentation expenses (up to € 10,000) for the employee/resident during the grant period.

The available budget for the temporary scheme Awareness of the History of Slavery – Institutions is € 400,000 in 2026.

General terms and conditions

Assessment Awareness of the History of Slavery - Institution

The Mondriaan Fund staff checks the submitted applications and attachments to ensure that they are complete. Once an application is complete, it is submitted to the committee that advises on awarding the Awareness of the History of Slavery grant for institutions.

An Awareness of the History of Slavery contribution can only be awarded if the committee gives a positive recommendation. Due to budgetary restrictions, we are unfortunately not always able to award grants to all applications that receive positive advisories from the committee. If the available budget is insufficient to award all positively assessed applications, these applications will be ranked according to the assessment criteria. This means that it can happen that an application receives a positive recommendation, but the grant can unfortunately not be awarded.

What happens to my application?
The advisory committee assesses your application on the basis of:
  • Information about the institution.
  • The plan, including a description of the position, residence or commission, a rationale outlining the significance of the appointment for raising awareness of the history of slavery in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and an explanation of how space will be provided for the perspectives of the involved communities.
  • A description of the professional practice of the visual artist, curator or heritage professional.
  • The CV of the visual artist, curator or heritage professional.
The advisory committee takes the following criteria into consideration:

The significance of the institution

  • To what extent are the position and experience of the institution significant for the cultural heritage and/or or visual arts field?

The significance of the work or residency for raising awareness of the history of slavery

  • Does the plan inspire confidence that the appointment will contribute to raising awareness of the history of slavery?
  • Does the experience of the visual artist, curator or heritage professional inspire confidence that the appointment will contribute to raising awareness of the history of slavery?

Perspective of involved communities *

  • Does the plan highlight the perspectives of involved communities, and do these communities play a meaningful role in the plan?

* The criterion concerning the perspectives of involved communities carries greater weight in the assessment, as this is a policy focus point within this grant.

The Awareness of the History of Slavery grant comprises 2 trajectories. Below you will find an explanation of Awareness of the History of Slavery for individuals.

Awareness of the History of Slavery - Individual

Are you a visual artist or independent curator/observer seeking to contribute to raising awareness of the history of slavery, and would you like to develop a new project towards this aim? You may be eligible for the grant for the Awareness of the History of Slavery for individuals.

Who is eligible?

Visual artists and independent curators, critics, theorists and observers who are professionally active within the visual arts and/or cultural heritage in the Netherlands and/or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom.

Through this temporary grant, the Mondriaan Fund aims to offer individual artists, curators and observers the opportunity to develop and carry out a plan that contributes to raising awareness of the history of slavery.

For what?

Visual artists may apply to realise an artistic plan that contributes to raising awareness of the history of slavery. Curators and observers may conduct preliminary research and develop and articulate perspectives and narratives that contribute to knowledge and awareness of the history of slavery. The grant is intended for the execution of a specific plan within a clearly defined working period. This may involve theoretical or reflective research; preliminary research and production for a presentation, event or project; a residency in the Netherlands or abroad; or the creation of new work.

A range of communities form an inextricable part of the history of slavery. Proposed plans should therefore offer space for the perspectives of communities of originally non-European descent that are directly connected to this history, including descendants of enslaved people; Indigenous peoples of Suriname and of Sint Maarten, Saba, Sint Eustatius, Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao; Chinese, Javanese and Hindustani indentured workers; as well as, for instance, Moluccan, Ghanaian and South African communities. One or more of these communities must play a meaningful role in the proposed plan.

How much?

The grant amount is determined per application. Applicants may request between € 20,000 and € 50,000 for a working period of a maximum of 12 months.

Fixed contribution:

  • A fixed contribution for no longer than 12 months. The standard amount is € 2.785 per month (full-time, 40 hours per week). Part of this sum is to cover time investment, and part to cover project costs. The duration of the contribution must be justified by a global timeline, included in your plan.
  • A fixed contribution cannot be awarded to an artist who received an Artist Start grant less than 1 year prior, or less than 4 years prior in the case of Artist Basic.

Flexible contribution:

  • A flexible contribution for no longer than 12 months. The amount depends on the plan, the duration of the project and the budget.
  • Applicants are obliged to contribute at least 10% of the total sum being requested from the Mondriaan Fund. This can be in the form of a personal investment, contributions from third parties, an interest-free loan from Fonds Kwadraat or a contribution raised through crowdfunding. This means that the contribution from the Mondriaan Fund will be for a maximum of 90% of the costs that are eligible for the grant. The grant may be used for costs directly related to the project, such as research costs, production costs, material costs and presentation costs. Applicants may also request support to cover their own time investment. The standard amount for this is € 2,180 per month (full-time, 40 hours per week).

If the application involves another party, such as an art venue, museum, gallery, company or client, the financial contribution from this party must be in acceptable proportion to the contribution requested from the Mondriaan Fund. Cultural institutions are expected to subscribe to the Fair Practice Code. Compliance with the Fair Practice Code automatically means that the institution implements the Guideline for Artists’ Fees.

In 2026, the available budget for the temporary scheme: Awareness of the History of Slavery – Individual is € 311,443.
