Please note: the International Collaborative Projects with Heritage Institutes application round with a deadline of 22 May falls under the old scheme. You can find the text in the grant archive at the bottom of the grant overview. The application round with deadline 4 September follows the new scheme for the 2025-2028 policy plan period, which you will find here below.
For whom
Cultural heritage institutions from the Netherlands and the Caribbean part of the Kingdom that want to collaborate with foreign heritage institutions in research projects in joint areas of collection.
The aim of this grant is to stimulate new insights, research and international collaborations in the field of cultural heritage that stand out internationally due to their significance, and will result in a presentation.
For what
The grant is intended for research projects in shared areas of collection focus, such as art historical and provenance research. It is also possible to apply for funding for the development phase of a project, e.g. to cover travel and accommodation costs for researchers and curators, or the costs of presenting the research results in the Netherlands.
How much
The amount of the grant will be determined per application. The Mondriaan Fund can contribute up to 40% of the variable project costs. For development research, applicants may request up to 70% of the variable project costs, to a maximum of €15,000.
Apply
Applications can be submitted twice a year using our online application system. The next deadline is Thursday 4 September, before 16.00 (Dutch time zone) / 10.00 (Caribbean time zone).
If you do not already have an account, please apply for one on this website. When determining your dates, keep in mind that the processing of your application will take 3 months after the deadline. A grant cannot be awarded retroactively.
The following is based on the deelregeling Internationale Samenwerkingsprojecten Erfgoedinstellingen (in Dutch), as published in the Staatscourant.
Conditions
- Grant applications are open to museums and heritage institutions that are publicly accessible and manage cultural heritage of national significance in the Netherlands or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom.
- In order to be eligible, such a Dutch institution must have entered into a partnership with similar cultural heritage institutions abroad.
- The proposed research project must be shown off by both the Dutch institution and its international partner/s. The presentation costs incurred by the international partner are not eligible for funding.
- The applicant will make a significant financial contribution to the acquisition of the object itself. The grant application is more likely to be successful if the applicant has raised some funds itself by means of a crowd-funding campaign, e.g. through voordekunst.nl.
- The foreign partner’s or partners’ share of the project costs must be in acceptable proportion to the grant awarded by the Mondriaan Fund.
Assessment
Mondriaan Fund staff check the submitted application and attachments for completeness and compliance with the terms and conditions. If approved, the application is submitted to the advisory committee, which issues a recommendation on awarding the International Collaborative Projects with Heritage Institutes grant.
Final assessment
An International Collaborative Projects with Heritage Institutes grant can only be awarded if the advisory committee issues a positive recommendation regarding the application. In such cases, the advisory committee may also advise on the amount of funding to be awarded and the period over which it will be disbursed. The Mondriaan Fund Board makes the final decision on these matters.
Due to budgetary restrictions, we are unfortunately not always able to award grants to all applications that receive positive advisories from the committee. In this case, the Mondriaan Fund Board asks the advisory committee to prioritise the positive advisories. This means that an application may receive a positive advisory, but a grant is nevertheless not awarded.
The advisory committee assesses the application on the basis of:
- A project plan explaining why the institution wishes to collaborate with the other party/parties and what the study is all about.
- A presentation plan outlining how an inspiring approach will be used to reach and engage audiences with the project.
- A detailed budget accompanied by a declaration that the research cannot be financed through other means.
- Pledges by the international organisations (and, where applicable, other Dutch organisations) that will take part in the study.
The advisory committee takes the following criteria into consideration:
The significance of the research and the quality of the research plan.
- How does the committee assess the quality of the research plan and the extent to which it contributes to new and relevant insights within the (inter)national heritage sector?
The significance of the involved institutions and the added value of the international collaboration.
- Are the positions of the involved institutions sufficiently relevant to the research? Is there a shared area of collection focus?
- Does the collaboration between the involved institutions inspire confidence that the final outcome will be of outstanding cultural-historical quality?
The quality of the presentation plan (not applicable for development research)
- Are the results of the research made sufficiently accessible to the intended audience?
- Does the plan include a convincing description of the target audience and a public engagement strategy?
