Assessment
Mondriaan Fund staff check the submitted applications and attachments to ensure that they are complete. Once an application is complete, it is submitted to the committee that advises on awarding Art Heritage Presentation grants.
If there are 2 or more parties submitting applications, this will in principle have a positive effect on the assessment. Whether this collaboration brings added value to the plan will also be taken into consideration.
An Art Heritage Presentation grant can only be awarded if the committee advises to that effect. If their recommendation is positive, the committee can also make a recommendation concerning the amount of the grant stipend and the period for which this will be valid.
Due to budgetary restrictions, we are unfortunately not always able to award grants to all applications that receive positive advisories from the committee. In this case, the Mondriaan Fund Board asks the advisory committee to prioritise the positive advisories. This means that an application may receive a positive advisory, but a grant is nevertheless not awarded.
The advisory committee assesses your application on the basis of:
- Your project plan including an intrinsic motivation, an explanation of the national or regional importance or allure of the presentation and a presentation plan which includes how you intend to reach an appropriate audience. It is also important that the project plan outlines how the project is different to the applying institution’s usual (exhibition) practice, both in terms of design and execution.
- Your budget, including cost estimates and a financing plan;
- If your project involves one or more artists, an explanation of how the artist honoraria guidelines will apply.
- Where applicable, statements of permission from participating parties.
The advisory committee takes the following criteria into consideration:
The quality of the organisation and the reputation of the curator/researcher
- Is the position of the institution(s) involved with the plans significant for contemporary visual art or cultural heritage in the Netherlands and/or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom?
- If applicable: is the reputation of the involved intermediary/curator from the involved institution(s) significant for contemporary visual art or cultural heritage in the Netherlands and/or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom?
An exemplary or otherwise remarkable project
- Are the activities/presentations outlined in the plan exemplary or otherwise remarkable?
- To what extent does the plan reveal that the applicant has an investigative and/or innovative character?
The quality of the public reach
- Does the presentation plan inspire confidence that the envisaged target groups will be reached in an engaging fashion?
The artistic and cultural context of the plan
- Is the plan significant within the regional, national and/or international context? Consider e.g. collaborations, participating artists, the location, etc.
Connections with other parties
- Does the applicant seek connections with other parties that can bolster the significance of the project? E.g. with regard to increasing support, regional collaborations, or reaching new audiences.
- Does the collaboration add value to the plan?
