Assessment
The submitted application and attachments will be checked for completeness by employees of the Mondriaan Fund. If this is approved, the application will be submitted to the members of the committee that advises on awarding an International Art Presentation contribution.
An International Art Presentation contribution can only be awarded if the advisory committee gives a positive recommendation. If the recommendation is positive, the advisory committee can make a suggestion about the amount of the contribution and the period over which it will be provided.
Unfortunately, due to a limited budget, the Mondriaan Fund cannot always honour all positive recommendations. In that case, the board of the Mondriaan Fund asks the advisory committee to rank the positive recommendations in order of priority. This means that it is possible for an application to be positively assessed, but that no contribution is awarded.
The committee assesses your application based on:
- Information about the host art institute;
- A plan that includes a statement of motivation and a communications plan describing how a suitable audience will be reached;
- The curriculum vitae of the artist(s) or curator;
- A description of the work of the artist(s);
- Visual documentation of work by the artist(s).
The advisory committee takes the following criteria into consideration:
-
The importance of the international reputation of the presenting institute
- How is the quality of the programming rated in the Netherlands and overseas? As indicated by recent external ratings, e.g. reviews.
- Has the institution achieved convincing public reach in recent years? This will involve both qualitative and quantitative assessment.
- If a curator is involved: the quality of the curator.
-
The quality and the development of the oeuvre of the artist*
-
- Does the artist have a distinctive artistic vision and is this convincingly conveyed in previous work?
- What is the quality of your oeuvre? Consider e.g. the significance of the oeuvre, the inherent imaginative strength, the command of the selected mediums and/or techniques and the work’s power of expression.
- Does the oeuvre show development appropriate to the phase of the professional practice?
-
The quality of the artist’s cultural entrepreneurship*
- Is the artist actively focused on developing their practice, entering into collaborations, entering into the public eye and finding an audience for their work?
-
The quality of the plan
- Is the plan in line with the context of the institution or event?
- Is the presentation significant for contemporary visual art from the Netherlands?
- Is the plan feasible?
-
The quality of the presentation plan
- Does the plan include a convincing strategy to reach a relevant audience?
-
The contribution of the project to international visibility
- Does the project contribute to the international visibility of contemporary art from the Netherlands?
In the case that the advisory committee positively assesses the above criteria and in the case that a publication is part of the application, the committee will also assess:
-
The importance of the publication
- Does the publication have substantive added value for the presentation and in particular for the participating artists from the Netherlands or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom?
*During the assessment, the background and context of the professional practice will be taken into consideration, such as schooling, cultural context and the nature and duration of the professional practice.
