Do you meet the conditions and did you go through the checklist?

For whom?

The grant is for visual artists and publishers, for the production of an edition of special and innovative publications about the work of living visual artists from the Netherlands or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom.

The Mondriaan Fund offers Publications grants to stimulate the knowledge and dissemination of Dutch contemporary art amongst the Dutch and international audiences, thereby boosting artists’ talent development. The grants are to be used to produce publications about the professional practice of living artists from the Netherlands or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom, who through substance and/or form contribute to the discussion of or insight into contemporary visual art.

For what?

The grant is intended for an oeuvre publication as an artist’s reflection on their work, a publication about the visual results of artistic research, or a first publication about emerging talent that increases (inter)national visibility. Publishers can also apply for a one-off opinion publication that reflects on the artist’s practice and thereby contributes to the formation of ideas regarding contemporary visual art in the Netherlands or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom.

How much?

The sum is determined per application, based on the budget. The maximum grant offered by the Mondriaan Fund is 35% of the eligible expenses.
The available budget for this round is €181,000.

For more information, read the explanation of the budget for applications in the case of self-publishing or applications (together with a) publisher.

How and when to apply

Applications for the Publication grant can be submitted 3 times a year, using the Mondriaan Fund online application system. Deadlines for the submission in 2025 are 20 February, 22 May and 28 August, before 16:00 (Dutch time zone) / 10:00 (Caribbean time zone).

You need an account before you can submit an application. If you do not already have an account, please apply for one on this website. Keep in mind that following the deadline date, a 3-month period is required for processing the applications. No grants are awarded retrospectively.

This explanation is based on the deelregeling Publicaties (in Dutch) and the associated amendment decision,, as published in the Staatscourant.

Apply now

Please note: it is not possible to upload documents after the deadline has passed. Applications that have not been submitted in full will not be processed.

Conditions

  • Grants for Publications may be awarded to visual artists and publishers, who are free to apply for them either jointly or individually.
  • The publication should relate to one or more living artists who are artistically and substantively active within the visual arts field, and in this capacity, part of the professional visual art practice in the Netherlands or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom.
  • The artist to whom the publication relates must have been a professional visual artist for at least 1 year.
  • A Grant for Publications cannot be applied and used while attending education at institutions, such as bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes or participating in programmes at academic or post-academic institutions.
  • It is not possible to apply for a Publications grant for publications about a historical subject and/or a historical development.

  • If a publisher is involved with an application, a realistic remuneration for the artist must be included in the budget.
General terms and conditions

Assessment

Mondriaan Fund staff check the submitted applications and attachments to ensure that they are complete. Once an application is complete, it is submitted to the advisory committee that advises on awarding the Publication grant.

If the advisory committee is positive about the artistic performance of the artist (the quality and development of the oeuvre and the quality of the cultural entrepreneurship), they also assess the quality of the plan and the visibility of the publication. A Publication grant can only be awarded if the committee makes a positive recommendation regarding on both the artistic performance of the artist and the quality of the plan and the visibility of the publication itself.

Due to budgetary restrictions, we are unfortunately not always able to award grants to all applications that receive positive recommendations from the committee. In this case, the Mondriaan Fund Board asks the advisory committee to prioritise the positive recommendations. This means that an application may receive a positive recommendation, but a grant is nevertheless not awarded, or that the contribution is lower.

What happens to my application?
The advisory committee assesses the artistic performance of the artist based on:
  • Visual documentation materials.
  • An explanation of the artist’s work and the professional practice.
  • CV of the artist.

In the case that the committee makes a positive recommendation regarding the artistic performance, it will also assess the quality and the visibility of the publication based on:

  • Plan with motivation for the publication.
  • A description of the structure of the publication and a draft design, preferably a publisher’s dummy or some sample sections of the book.
  • Technical specifications with information about the size, edition, language, names of the graphic designer and (if applicable) writer(s), and the retail price.
  • A presentation plan with an (inter)national distribution plan appropriate to the edition. Additionally a promotion plan outlining how a relevant audience will be reached and how the expected sales of the edition are to be achieved.
The advisory committee takes the following criteria into consideration:

The quality and development of the oeuvre* **

  • Is there evidence of a distinctive artistic vision, and is this convincingly conveyed in previous work?
  • Is the work of distinctive quality within the context of the professional contemporary visual arts? (Consider e.g. the substantive significance of the work, its inherent imaginative strength, the command of the selected mediums and/or techniques and the work’s power of expression).
  • Is there evidence of a convincing development of the oeuvre appropriate to the phase of the professional practice?

The quality of the cultural entrepreneurship

  • Does the artist make convincing efforts to promote the understanding and appreciation of the intentions of the work? And does this result in increased visibility and appreciation of the practice within professional contemporary visual art circles?

In the case that the advisory committee positively assesses the above criteria, the committee will also assess:

The quality of the publication**

  • Are the artistic guiding principles in the plan distinctive and are these convincingly conveyed in the publication?
  • Does the significance of the publication represent added value within the determined context?
  • Is the publication significant with regard to thinking regarding contemporary visual art?

The visibility of the publication

  • Is there a convincing approach to the professional distribution of the publication, and does the promotion strategy (e.g. online campaigns, collaborations or press coverage) successfully contribute to the intentions and visibility of the publication?
  • Considering the proposed use of resources and promotion strategy, is it plausible that the applicant will sell the edition?

* During the assessment, the background and context of the professional practice will be taken into consideration, such as schooling, the nature and duration of the professional practice and the cultural context.

**Please note: the criteria ‘quality and development of the artist’s oeuvre’ and, if applicable, ‘the quality of the publication’ carries more weight in the decision-making process as this is a policy focus point within the grant.
